Emergancy At SFO Today?

Today I was over by SFO and saw what looked to be to be a G550 in a white c/s. The a/c took off from the 28 runways but the thing is that it took a very sharp right turn right after it passed the freeway. When entering it's turn the number one engine (the left one) had a substantial amount of dark smoke trailing out of the engine. The a/c in question was one that I had seen the day before departing from 10R and was easily id'd by it's c/s.

The c/s shooting upwards towards the tail. I believe it's one of the NetJet's a/c based out of SFO for I have seen this a/c before.

My question is;
Did it make a sharp right turn to return to SFO and make the 28R/L Approach or did it just make the sharp right turn to meet it's heading.

The thing is, if its heading is a sharp right of 28R/L then why didn't they just use the 10R/L runways? I did see what appeared to be an A320 departing from those runways at the same time.

Well if it was a G550 it wasn't operated by NetJets/EJA. EJM opperates G-200's, G-IV's, and G-V's but no 550's just yet. Sorry no info on your question.

Is there a difference between the G550 and GV? I was told that they were just the same a/c with a new name...

Sounds like a QUIET TWO departure. One of the SIDs, and probably so named for noise abatement. Note it says below that it's for use on 28R/L departures when weather conditions permit. See here:

I used to live on a bluff looking straight down the 10s/28s, don't think this SID existed at the time. Damn planes would fly right above our house (pretty close too, being that we were on the top of a bluff), shook the entire place. This was in the early 1980's. Wonder when they put this SID into effect; seems like it exists specifically to placate residents living where I was.

I hate to break it to you, but there are a TON of gulfstreams out there with a similiar c/s. As for the name designations, Gulfstream changed them when they aquired the Astra and Galaxy, which are now the G-100 and G-200 respectively. They changed the names of their current products to give the entire line similiar names. The G-550 is actually the G-V SP which I believe just recieved it's certification and has yet to end up in customer hands. The only external difference between the G-V and the SP is an extra window.

If the plane you saw was a G-II or G-III which is possible unless you really got a good look at the engines it is very possible that what you saw was those RR speys coughing out some smoke, which they are very good at. The only real way to tell the difference externally is by looking at the windows(the G-II isn't as sleek), and both have the smaller Tay engines versus the Spey on the G-IV(G-400). The G-V has a much greater wingspan than any other model and this is the way I differentiate between the II-IV and the G-V.
