Connecting With AC - Will They Let Me Change?

Mon Oct 18, 2004 8:57 am

This week I am flying Air Canada YQB-YYZ-LHR. My question is if I arrive early enough at YQB, as I intend do, will they let me change to an earlier flight to YYZ should there be space available? Is this normal practice or will they be pedantic and make me wait?

Yup, you can be put on stand by, your bags will be tossed down and if you are added they will be put on and sent to YYZ.... thats again if there is room...

I would recomend getting their earlier and the agent should ask you if you would like to go on an earlier flight as long as there is room, if there is no room just ask and they prolly put you on standby

MMmmm....depending on the mood of the agent at the time, you might be refused an earlier flight. Such things DO happen.

I flew with AC LHR-YVR-YYJ a few years ago.

As AC have a ton of flights between YVR-YYJ, I was allowed to board the next flight rather than waiting for my ticketed flight. There were plenty of spare seats in both directions so I guess they just wanted me out of the airport. Even though my luggage was tagged for my ticketed YVR-YYJ flight, the baggage handlers seemed to just put it on the very next flight so that my bags actually arrived before I did and were just clogging up the carrousel at YYJ where any Canadian sticky fingers could have took them.

Depends on your fare class.

http://www.aircanada.ca/cto5/newFareTypesE.html

If you have a cheapo ticket (Tango/Fun/Econo), the agent will most likely refuse, and nothing short of offering a first born will get them to change. Of course, if you are a high miles Aeroplan member, they may accomodate you....
buhh bye

Lymanm:
That is why I was asking. I've never flown with Air Canada before and according to my ticket i'm "L" class (whatever that means - something down the back anyway!). I just figure, and this is a general question not necessarily specific to me, if someone is catching a connecting flight is it not in the airline's best interest to get them to the next airport as soon as possible, be it on the ticketed flight or not, in case the ticketed flight runs late, the connection is missed and then the airline has to take care of them. Of course if it was was a simple YQB-YYZ one way, I would understand they'd stick to the fare category's rules, but otherwise, what?

The agent has some discretion - over and above the usual fare rules - and many will change your flight in case they need your seat on the later flight. The fact you are connecting to an international flight works in your favor. However, if there are more standbys than seats on the earlier flight, you can bet that customers who have paid for more flexibility will leapfrog you.
