Mexican LCC Líneas Aéreas Azteca Expands Network

Mon Oct 18, 2004 12:32 pm

Quietly and finally Azteca is raising the hand and will soon show activity in the market along with very important fleet changes!

They will add 4 'new' B737-300s all ex. Air New Zealand leased from AWAS which btw 1 is already at MEX at their hangars. Following this new additions, its also highly possible that Azteca will sign a lease agreement with AWAS for 3 B737-500.

Azteca will double capacity in a 120%! They currently fly a fleet of 6 B737, with this new 2004 additions fleet will raise to 13 aircraft's!

6 possible new destinations are on the table!

3 Domestic new destinations:
- MZT

Other 2 not confirmed but ZLO, HMO, ACA, ZIH and others are being considered.

3 International new destinations:
- IAD
- OAK
- MCO

Plus charter flights to Costa Rica and Panamá.

There will be a lot of changes in the management area and other departments!

Thumbs up for Azteca!  Big thumbs up

ZIH and ACA really need ZE. Fares to ZIH are ridiculosly expensive now that CINTRA has the market all for itself.

MCO sounds good too. If they can keep their cost down, I am sure they will be successful. In OAK they will have stiff competition from MX and its flights to GDL-MEX, BJX and ZCL. As for IAD, my first impression is that they may succeed but on second thoughts I am not so sure because I guess the route really needs a premium class.

In any case, it is great news to read that ZE is growing. All the best to ZE!!!

These are great news. However, somebody explain to me how they managed to do this, I thought they were in the brink of bankruptcy?

Just a few weeks ago (someone correct me if I am wrong) the company was recapitalized. The original shareholders were diluted and now hold just 20% of the capital stock or so. The rest is fresh capital injected by new investors. Somebody mentioned here in a.net that these investors are stand-ins for Iranian businessmen... that, I don't know. If you run a search you might find info on the investment. The money received by the company was most surely used to repay some debt.

Interesting... I wonder if they will re-vamp or better, link their FF program to one of the major alliances: surely would be good to have again a Mexican airline become a member of OneWorld, or (why not?) Star Alliance... IF Azteca keeps growing, adding destinations, and keeps up with healthy finances it will eventually be a match to some "small" players in Star... Names like British Midland, Tyrolean or Lauda come to mind...

A bit off-topic (now that Adriaticus mention the still remote possibility of ZE joining an alliance and the examples of relatively small carriers at *A)... Does Tyrolean have a first class -or upgraded- service?

I'm not sure but I thought that First or Bussines and a mile accrue and redemption program was needed to join....

I think ZE would do well at OAK. The demise of Taesa and Allegro Air wasn't the fault of OAK. OAK could use another competitor.

Fly727:
Tyrolean has been rebranded as Austrian Arrows and they do offer business class service (european domestic standard - which means no special seats like in America, and they change it regarding the number of pax on C & Y).

Adriaticus:

I hope one day ZE can compare in size with the airlines you mentioned.

Currently, 6A carries more pax than Tyrolean. Yet, BMI and Lauda are way ahead. BMI carried more pax (8.4 M pax) than MX (7.9M pax) and a little bit less than AM (8.8 M pax)

Hopefully one day 6A and ZE will grow to that level.

Also, though I have been tempted to call ZE or 6A as LCC, in strict sense they are not.

LCC, besides lower fares, also offer several flight a day in a route, have little or no inflight service, fast turn arounds, use of alternate airports, etc.

6A might have several freq a day between MTY-MEX, GDL-MEX and MTY-GDL, but the rest of cities covered are only 1 flight a day.

Again, in my belief they are just airlines offering lower fares than MX or AM, but still way expensive to international standards.

I think GOL is the only airline in Latin America with a little resemblance to LCC, and yet it follows an entire differnet model as LCC in Europe or US. My bets are on GOL to show Latin American aircarriers the way to "tropicalise" the LCC model.

With the upcoming aircraft, Azteca next year might easily reach 1.5M pax. At least ZE needs a fleet of +- 70 B737s to reach 9M pax a year. Still a long way to go!

At least, right now Aviacsa is the our only chance in the near future! If they keep growing, improving their service and little by little renewing their fleet there are big possibilities of seeing them in *A perhaps!

Interesting news. Good to see MCO in the list, somehow someway back in the 90's I saw almost all mexican passenger airlines at MCO at one time or another. After years of absence Mexicana is back along with Aeromexico but that's about it. Although I'm not sure if the latter ever took a 'time out' from MCO. Their Orlando service has been relatively continuous I believe.

Gracias Ricardo for the news.. have you photographed anything new lately?

Pzurita... I was not aware BMI and Lauda were so big in terms of carried pax. However, if Tyrolean (or Austrian Arrows) is a player in the Alliance... Food for ZE's thoughts, ain't it?

Again: why "Bhutan"?

Cheers,

Sorry to bring this up, but 2 or 3 months ago there was a thread discussing that Azteca could go out of business. So, I guess they are doing well after all, aren´t they?

Mexicana does not fly scheduled service to MCO, only charters

This summer there were 2 flights on Saturday and if I remember correctly one or two during the week.. scheduled charter? Actually I think they started service again in the late 90's after they stopped serving MCO sometime around 91-92. Around 2000 it was scheduled, then in 2001 they went back to only chaters. Not sure after that what happened.

True statement and very important to point out! A decade ago almost all mexican airlines flew to MCO! Of course, a consequence of better days in the mexican economy and look like those days are now kind of returning!

Magnicharters has also shown interest for charters into MCO but I guess they're only waiting for their 3 extra B737-300s due for the short term!

Gracias Ricardo for the news.. have you photographed anything new lately?

Unfortunately I haven't photograph 'new stuff' lately! WX has been a disaster in the last 3/4 months! In those 120 days I've only shooted 3 rolls of Provia! Imagine that! Almost close to none! And I also haven't swap slides lately! I haven't forgot I once promess some pics and please forgive me!! But I promess I'll try to make some time for the hobby a.s.a.p!

Yeap weather has not cooperate! What pink 727? Didn't I told you about a blue 727? I also send it to you, didn't I? Is it the one from Líneas Aéreas Mexicanas de Carga SA (LAMCASA).

Yeap I'm still shooting slides and will keep doing it until the day Fuji stop producing film! So when are you planning to visit MEX now?

ZE as a LCC, I don't see them changing their eurowhite livery! Unfortunately they're not WN.

You sent me the A300 from mexicana de carga and the Aero Postal DC8, I havent seen the 727

I was going to go with my brother but we had an argument and we didn't go lol. It was a travel deal for 2 people that this chick friend of ours got us, she works at a travel agency. It was a good deal but we had to use it right away besides I know nothing about Mexico city, where are the good areas to stay etc so I didn't even try to get someone else to go with me. It didnt include hotel just airfare. On top of that I didn't have a passport and that took like a month, in about the time the deal expired.

Maybe sometime next year, cuando vienes por aca tu? This is the good season right now in s.florida for photos, until early March. These past two months brought a good number of new subjects, I didnt expect they'd be this good. Hoy por primera vez vino el LAB Cargo 727, unfortunately the weather was kinda crappy so I didnt go. It might come tomorrow  Smile

Hey Miamix707,

You've got an email! I sent you a picture of LAMCASA's B727F.

Too bad you couldn't make it to MEX. At least there's always a next time and more time in life!
