Delta´s MD-11s Heading For Fedex

Mon Oct 18, 2004 7:11 pm

The MD-11 was a meagre success as a passenger aircraft, but a big hit as a freighter. Delta apparently has finalisized a deal to sell their MD-11s to Fedex.

Sorry if that has been said before, but there is no thread on this forum about it, so I suppose not.

Good for Delta! They will get some of the badly-needed cash from that deal! Maybe about 250million??

What about Ship 802? That is the one with the fire damage that has been parked at ATL for so long. Is that a/c a part of the deal?

802 was not part of the deal.... 802 is being parted out and will most likely be scrapped...

Wow...FX must be doing REAL well. Didn't they take DC-10s from AA or TW?

Is FedEx getting any MD-11s its hands on regardless of engine type? Do they operate both GE and PW-powered birds?

Many of the very old ex-AA DC-10s aquired by Fedex won´t be converted anymore. They stopped that plan already some time ago. Why should they convert a 30 year old DC-10 when 10-15 year-old MD-11s are available a fair prices?
This deal makes me think wether these aircraft are meant as replacements for some of the older DC-10Fs Fedex still has. Some date back to 1971. They can´t be far from end.

Reply 4 is correct. We thought 802 would have been part of the FedEx deal
for parts. The remaining engines were stripped last week at Delta North

This would make sense, DL is not putting the MD11s back into service and FedEx can pick up some very good aircraft for a reasonable price.....the MD11 has been a good thing for FedEx and, as pointed out above, the MD10 project does not seem to be proceeding, so additional MD11s can certainly be utilized in the system.

DL can certainly use the cash.

The Fedex deal was for the 8 MD-11's that DL ownes. The rest are leased by DL. N803DL and N804DL fly for World. N801DL is currently the subject of negotiations with WO for a short term lease. As has been stated 802 is going to be cut up.

Thanks DAL7001....This is sad to know that 802 will not survive. I cannot believe that the repairs would exceed teh value of the aircraft. Can you give me any idea as to the number of cycles and hours. Thanks and sad day to lose a big beautiful bird like this when it is in the perfect spot to be repaired...

Interesting how this site seems to be under the impression that M11s are powered by TurboJet engines  Laugh out loud

Yes, Fed Ex is operating a fleet of MD-11s with both the GE & PW powerplants. UPS also does the same thing but with a much smaller fleet than Fed Ex. As for ship 802, she'll be salvaged for all useful spare parts before what left of her will be melted down. So with 200 MD-11s built, 194 in service & 6 hull losses. Regards.

Its not in the perfect spot to be repaired. It burned. It has a gaping hole in the fuse.

I know the Delta is under contract to provide MD11 training to World so I guess that they are keeping the simulator busy with outside work. Delta has been very good in recent years getting contracts to provide maintenance and training services to several companies. Among them are 767 maintenance for Royal Air Maroc, MD11 maintenance for World, and CF34 engine overhaul for regional airlines.

Doesn't look too gaping to me... I THINK (Just guessing) it was that the wing and all of the related hydrolics and other such items located in the wing were damaged and that from DL's $$ Standpoint the quota Boeing gave them wasn't worth it at all...

Good to hear DL gets a step up for once.

Thanks again.

Thank you for pointing this out, I obviously made an incorrect statement above. I had read that FedEx has decided not to convert a good number of 2nd hand DC10s that it acquired from UA and AA (which I think its still true - I hope that I am not wrong again) and drew the incorrect conclusion that the MD10 program was not proceeding.

Anyway, FedEx acquiring the ex-DL MD11s will be a good thing for both airlines. Thanks again.

Fedex officially said that many of the very old ex-AA planes won´t be converted anymore, some time ago. I assume the MD-10 conversion program covers the existing DC-10 fleet of which most are newer than the old AA-birds, and not additional DC-10s. I don´t think Fedex will convert DC-10s to MD-10-freighters anymore unless they are among the very last built.
