BA's New A321's - First Revenue Service?

Tue Oct 19, 2004 6:53 am

I believe BA have just received their first A321 and I was wondering when it's first service will be and where to(or has this already occured?)?

Secondly what routes will the A321's be employed on going forward?

Thanks

James.

From what iv heard is that LHR-AMS will be one of the first routes, eventually BA is only going to fly the A321 on that route.

Some of the 6 daily LHR-ZRH flights will also be operated by A321 from the end of October on.

Expect to see them on the routes they were bought for, namely the peak shuttle runs out of LHR to MAN,ABZ,GLA,EDI etc. They will replace the 757s on the services which need the extra capacity.

Peak runs are early morning and early evening. The rest of the day would be spent on European services. BMI do something similar with their A321s.

I was planning a BA flight LHR-CDG flight for mid-Nov, and noticed that some of the flights (first flight in the morning LHR-CDG was one I noticed) seemed to be shown as an A321...

Whitehatter- The BA A321s will only be operating on short haul routes from terminal 4 for the time being so as to eliminate towing between terminals 1 and 4. Therefore the routes that will be seeing the A321 service will be CDG, ZRH, CPH, OSL, VIE and AMS for the time being.

The new 321's will be based solely at terminal 4 so will serve all short-haul destinations departing from there except DME. So we can expect to see them in CDG,AMS,BRU,ZRH,GVA,VIE etc

G-EUXC did its 1st commercial flight as BA716 from LHR to ZRH on 16th October. It landed on runway 14 at 4.34pm.

The 321s will be on 4 of the 8 daily flights LHR to GVA, with the rest of the frequencies being a mix of basically every aircraft.

Like stated before the 321s will only operate from terminal 4.

Do they have adjustable rows of Club Europe or are these fixed?

"They will replace the 757s on the services which need the extra capacity."

Do you mean "supplement" instead of "replace"? The 757 is the larger airplane. Or are the BA A321 in a high-density configuration with more seats than a 757?

N79969, I believe the BA A321s have 193 seats, whereas the 757s have 186(?)
I guess they just dont need the range of the 757 anymore.

Interesting. Thanks. How did they manage that? Fewer or no premium class seats?

@Graham: the Airbus press release mentions 183 seats, not 193

@Whitehatter: no domestic flights at the moment, all services are operating from T4

The schedule on the first day was LHR-ZRH-LHR-CDG-LHR-BRU if I'm not mistaken. The aircraft will visit BRU on a very regular base.

BA's new 321's have 'flexible seating' so they can change the club class/euro traveller configuration depending on the booked loads. In an all 'euro-traveller' (ie economy) configuration the aircraft holds 194.

The 757's also have flexible seating although the maximum pax it can hold in an all economy config is 182.
BA's 757's were delivered with a galley in the front, middle and rear of the aircraft (nice for the crew but at the cost of bums on seats). The A321's however only have a front and rear galley so freeing up more space in the cabin for seats. It will have 4 toilets and wardobes at the front and rear.

@Sabena_690: It's spelled basis if your going to be nit picky  Big grin
I'd read on another forum that it would be 193.

hmmmmwell either their press release is wrong or their training manuals are wrong! Picked up my 321 training manual last week....says 194 seats. Maybe a mis-print? I can't be bothered counting them on the seat plan!
