US Airways Approved For More Carib. Destinations

Wed Oct 20, 2004 7:20 am

US DOT today approved US Airways' request to offer scheduled service between the United States and points in the Netherland Antilies (Curacao and Bonaire), Haiti, Dominica, and Trinidad & Tobago with their own aircraft.

Wonder what they are planning. Service to Haiti will make them only the second US airline there, and would most certainly be operated out of Fort Lauderdale. Service to Port of Spain, another less touristy/more business and VFR Caribbean market, would also likely be from Fort Lauderdale.

Nice.I hope those routes be profitable for US, they really need the cash. Now they are landing near Venezuela!, hopefully they'll fly to CCS in the future.

It certainly seems that US is looking southward to the carib and central america as part of its plan to re-invent itself - there is certainly more money to be made on these routes, and US has the Airbus and 757 to fly the routes, but is there sufficient demand for all of this expansion? The big question is: how will AA respond to these moves by US? AA has dominated service to the region for years (especially the all-important Florida to carib/latin america routes) and have made a ton of money on these routes in the past - AA will certainly not be amused by US's expansion plans.

AA has not yet responded to US's plans for the FLL carib/latin american gateway - I find AA's silence rather scary!

Interesting move there. Is AA still operating the 737-800 flight from Fort Lauderdale to Port Au Prince?

In the near term, DOM, POS, TAB can all be codeshared to through the GoCaribbean network.

In the medium term, I could see US flying its own aircraft on FLL-PAP/POS, and possibly Saturday-only flights on CLT/PHL-BON/CUR/POS (certainly not all of them).
I'm the expert on here on two things, neither of which I care about much anymore.

Why do you say that the new US Carrib. flights would origionate out of FLL?? CLT is their "Carribean Hub". I'd be willing to bet that the flights will still origionate from Charlotte.
If landing is about "kissing" the ground, you just about raped it.

I don't think that AA need to respond, I even think that they shouldn't. US might get something of the pie, but there prices to the Caribic/Central America are not that agressive. So AA could loose more in starting a price war than with a peaceful rivalry.

Assuming you aren't aware, US is opening a new focus city in FLL in Feb. 2005. Destinations will include new cities in the Caribbean and Central America, with key domestic destinations to feed these flights.

Few cities can support service to PAP. FLL (and South Florida in general) can, which is why we'll see FLL-PAP and not CLT-PAP.

FLL-PAP will compete directly with AA, which has already established itself as the carrier of choice for Haitians in the South Florida area. I'm happy to see that US is looking to expand beyond the destinations announced already from FLL in the near term.

This is excellent news. I was waiting for US Airways to expand into Trinidad and Tobago. I wonder if they would only go to Tobago or they would really do the FLL-POS route. Im sure the FLL-POS route with their own aircraft would be very profitable. A weekly flight may give the charters some competition. Would be great to see a Us Airways 330 in POS, but thats just getting a little to far of myself lol.

Regards,
