Uhhhh the population of Nassau and Suffolk Counties taken together is 2.8 million -- considerably more than hub cities like STL
, etc. Southwest's average fares to Florida from ISP
are essentially equivalent to jetBlue's fares to Florida from JFK
doesn't need to draw any traffic at all from NYC; there are plenty of people in its catchment area.
Check out the ISP
fares on Colgan; they are considerably higher than LGA
fares on the Shuttles. This route is being operated for Long Islanders (and Bostonians) who are willing to pay for the convenience of flying to or from an airport that is close-by. People are not flying ISP
for a good deal.
-Florida routes don't do well due to lack of service on LCC's from JFK
to the same cities; similarly LGA
sees LCC service from ATA. ISP
has been a success for WN
largely because there are plenty of people on Long Island who would prefer to use a closer-by, smaller, less congested airport when the fares are competitive.
