BKK - New Airport Progress

Wed Oct 20, 2004 4:09 pm

I am in the early stages of planning a trip to Far East 2005. BKK/HKG/SIN are on the agenda, maybe incorporating flights with EK to take a stop-over in DXB for the air show (November). I am trying to establish whether the new airport serving Bangkok will be open and if so what percentage of flights are proposed to operate there and what will be the future for Don Muang?
Any help would be appreciated..

The new airport should be open by November - see for their work plan. Parts, like the airport hotel, will still be under construction.

If I remember correctly, the new airport will serve mostly international; the old mostly domestic.

I flew BHX-DXB-BKK last year on EK - superb service, well recommended.

The Prime Minister still insists that the new Bangkok International Airport (Suvannabhumi Airport) be opened on 29th Sept. 2005. Many of us doubts that it will not be on schedule. Some expects that it might be delayed for about half a year or more.

The latest news on the use of the current Don Muang Airport is that it might be reserved as a supporting airport. Maintenace facilities of TG will still be there for major maintenace job. The terminal building might be occupied by some government offices. A few months ago there were news that the airport would be used for LCCs but later there were complains from many airlines about charges for the old Don Muang Airport would be much lower that the new one and, therefore, they could not compete with the LCCs. The idea was later abandoned.

Thanks for the update!

Great to hear that they will NOT keep Don Muang open for low cost carriers! It's much better to just have one airport for a city if possible to make connections easier. They should have closed Gimpo in Seoul when they opened Inchon, in my opinion.

Looking forward to try the new airport, looks VERY nice!
