Delta Email Mentions Bankruptcy Possibility

Thu Oct 21, 2004 5:14 am

Delta seems to be prepping passengers for a bankruptcy filing and reassuring them that if it happens the airline will operate as normal. Below is an email I received this afternoon. Note how Delta says "...even if it (bankruptcy) were to happen, we will continue to provide you..."

We at Delta Air Lines understand there is more choice in air travel than ever before, and we are working hard to be your preferred airline. You may have read in the news about our transformation plan and the work we are doing to become an even stronger competitor for your business. Delta is committed to meeting your travel needs now and in the future.

Our goal is to create a new airline for a new era—one that is comfortable, affordable, simple, stylish, and inviting to our customers. In the weeks ahead, our focus will be on continuing to implement the vision of a newly structured, customer-focused airline, with a cost structure that allows us to compete aggressively wherever we fly.

While we strive to make your overall Delta experience more enjoyable and convenient, we recognize that we have several hurdles to overcome to avoid court supervised restructuring. We continue to work to avoid this outcome. However, even if it were to happen, we will continue to provide you with safe, secure, and reliable service both in the air and on the ground. For example:

• Tickets will be honored, and refunds and exchanges will be made as usual.

• The miles in your SkyMiles® account will not be affected, and you will continue to have the opportunity to earn and redeem miles with Delta and our partners just as you've always done.

• Amenities like Delta's Crown Room Club® will continue to be available in select cities we serve.

• You'll still earn one mile for every eligible dollar spent and Always Double Miles® on qualifying purchases made with the Delta SkyMiles Credit Card from American Express®.

Please visit delta.com/transform for the latest Delta news, more information about the improvements referenced above, and our plans to create a better travel experience. We welcome your feedback and suggestions via e-mail at transform.delta@delta.com.

On behalf of all Delta employees worldwide, thank you for your continued loyalty and support.

Sincerely,

Paul Matsen

I would agree that is does cover the possibility of a Ch. 11 Bankruptcy filing, even if doesn't use the 'B' word. It also suggests what they are trying to do to avoid it. Some of this plan will probably include the need to go to Ch. 11 so can go to the court to get labor givebacks/cuts. With their latest huge $650 MILLION loss in the 3rd qtr and $3 BILLION + losses for the last year and the continuting high fuel prices, it doesn't look like they will be able to avoid Ch. 11.

NonRevKing, don't let AA777jr get you - he's already proven to be one of the most spectacularly uninformed members in a.net history, so you can ignore his posts.

Let's just say he's replaced ScottysAir as the airwhiners.net whipping boy.  Big grin

Haha, thanks for the heads up!

It might be unusual, but it's smart. A lot of the general public is uneducated on the process of chapter 11. They hear "bankruptcy" and automatically think that means out of business, no flights, no skymiles. This is a useful way of getting the word out that that won’t be the case.

I got the email - it seemed a bit out of the blue to me, I wasn't aware that DL were in that kind of trouble. I have to say it's dented my confidence in them a bit. How much worse must it be than they're saying, if they're prepared to spam a million or so SkyMiles customers to "reassure" them everything's OK ?

This is truly sad to read about the once-proud Delta. I've always had good experiences on DL. This has all happened within 3 years. Right after 9/11, DL appeared to be among the winners who would make it out of the storm.

I think DL will survive. They have good employees who provide good service. They will just be different from what they are today.

Don't pay too much attention to what a certain memeber says about DL going before UA. He is the same member that said UA wasn't very large at ORD!!

He's also the same member that said UA didn't have 727s.  Big grin

This plan might work to get more concessions, but UA tried it with the mechanics, and it sort of backfired. Honestly, I don't think there's anything stopping a DL bankruptcy...just too much of a mess down in ATL.

This e-mail from Delta is basically a marketing tactic as to keep passengers calm if/when Delta files for Chapter 11. Reassurance will likely keep passengers from cancelling their flights if they hear Delta filing for Chp. 11.

Is it a sign that they will be filing soon? I believe so.

In my opinion, i think we will see Delta and ATA going into bankruptcy in the next couple or so weeks.
