Types Of Engines

What is the difference between a high by-pass ratio engine and a "regular" engine?

Thanks for the info.

In a general definition, a high bypass turbofan engine will move more than 3 times the air through the cold stream than through the core.

JT8Ds are not high bypass fans, but they are a fan engine. CFM 56 and larger are true high bypass engines.

In a high bypass engine, the ratio of air that travels around the engine core (bypasses it) to the amount of air that flows through the engine core and is used for combustion is at least 5:1.

More Powerful And Quieter

because the air travelling around the engine (the bypass air) mixes with the high temp exhast from the engine core, reducing the temp and the velocity of the exhast, thereby reducing the noise as well.
