Airline Propaganda For Service To China

Fri Oct 22, 2004 7:29 am

I was browsing through the dockets on the DOT's website, and I came across these dockets from the different airlines applying to China that were basically advertising their airline, saying why it would be best for them to receive the service. Take a look at them, if you get the chance. What do you think about their presentations? I think that some of what the airlines say is BS, but some of their other arguments are valid points.

AA's: http://dmses.dot.gov/docimages/pdf90/300870_web.pdf
CO's: http://dmses.dot.gov/docimages/p79/300902.pdf
DL's: http://dmses.dot.gov/docimages/p79/300949.tif (not available as pdf)
North American's: http://dmses.dot.gov/docimages/pdf90/300901_web.pdf
UA's: http://dmses.dot.gov/docimages/pdf90/300892_web.pdf

Be forewarned that these files are large (some are as big as 70 MB), but the data within is very interesting. CO's has a particularly impressive graphic format, although I don't think that is at the top of the DOT's list of criterion for awarding service.

Some really interesting presentations with a lot of interesting graphs. For example I didn't know that 49% of all USA-China traffic is to/from California. Good argument from UA why SFO should get the additional frequency.

After looking ofter all presentations I would award CO and UA.

What DL and AA offer seems not that benefitial for American consumers.

I agree that both CO and UA have strong arguments, although UA's might be slightly weakened by the fact that they already have a number of frequencies to China, whereas CO has nothing.

I think that AA only has a partial chance due to the fact that UA will already be serving the exact same route that AA is applying for. DL's chance is slim to none - who is going to backtrack to ATL to go to China? Except for those living in the Southeast, no one would benefit from the service. North American has no chance whatsoever.

In my opinion, AA and CO will each get awarded seven frequencies. They present the best cases.

Do you mean that nothing will be available for 2006 at all then? CO gets 7 EWR-PEK for 2005 and AA gets 7 ORD-PVG for 2005?

They seem to be bringing their cases to the everyday Joe Flyer too ... Delta has an online form letter you can directly sent to the DOT petitioning for ATL-China service....
