Ryanair - Easyjet Takeover? Who Thought Up This!

Fri Oct 22, 2004 9:18 pm

Read this today on www.rte.ie the Irish National Broadcasters website.

"Ryanair denies EasyJet takeover plans"

October 22, 2004 13:01
Ryanair Holdings said today that it had no plans to make a takeover bid for no-frills rival EasyJet.

'Hell will freeze over first. I don't know where this is coming from,' a Ryanair spokeswoman said in response to media reports citing market speculation it was considering a bid.

EasyJet shares continued to rise today, gaining over 3% in a firmer London market. The stock has gained around 12% in the past week, rising off record lows reached on concern about high fuel costs and low ticket prices.

Ryanair and EasyJet, two of Europe's most successful low-cost carriers, are fierce rivals.

Ryanair has been slashing fares to fill seats and has repeatedly warned of a 'bloodbath' in the European low-cost market this winter as intensifying competition puts the crunch on ticket prices.

Ryanair declined to comment on whether it was seeking any major acquisitions. It reports first-half results on November 2.

Ryanair shares were up seven cent to €3.81 in Dublin this lunchtime.

Who thought up that load of tripe i wonder???

Could be worse. It could still only be the likes of BA,LH,AF etc offering flights only from their main hubs and at extremly expensive prices. The likes of easyJet and Ryanair have brought regular flying to the regular people

GKirk, I fully agree. BRS-GLA prices have fallen by fully 66% since Go (thence easyJet) started.

Hehe - Kirkie, I picture you in glasses and a cardigan a la League of Gentlemen, saying that.

As said above, the EU competition commissioner would have words to say if any merger between U2 and FR was attempted - talk about a gigantic monopoly of the UK LCC market. I for one hope not, U2 and FR serve slightly different market segments, it seems to me, and I would prefer for U2 to keep running it's own ship.

I'm not complaining about LCCs in general. However, Ryanair is worst in customer service among all LCCs I have tried so far. Cheap tickets alone is not enough...if Ryanair was just a little bit like Southwest, I would love to see them expanding all over...

I just read in a swedish travel magazine that Ryanair wouldn't mind buying FR. The stocks has really raised in the two companies after this announcment.

What will this do to the LCC industry if it happens? Will the prices raise or will they keep the low prices they always did?

I wonder if Icelandair is buying a stake in EasyJet in order to initiate a low-cost competition with Iceland Express on routes such as KEF-STN and KEF-CPH. Icelandair have themselves been prohibited from offering lower fares than Iceland Express on those routes because of their status as a market leader. Icelandic authorities could however not prevent EasyJet from offering lower fares than Iceland Express.

The funny thing is that a couple of days ago - in a thread about a possible merger of VS and BD - I posted the possibility of a merger of the two (message was deleted, coz off-topic  Pissed ).. Interesting that this possibility is considered  Big grin

Otherwise, I second Udo.. the lesser FR, the better  Big thumbs up (Pe@rson, where are thou?? )
