Delta @ GRR

Sat Oct 23, 2004 6:10 am

I heard a rumor on another website a while back that DL was switching gates/ticket counters at GRR at the end of last month (currently using gate A4, switching to B4) , and perhaps even servicing a scheduled flight into GRR for Allegiant Air. Does anyone know if/when that's going to happen? Just curious.

Thanks,

Jordan

I don't think it really matters if the skyteam carriers aren't right next to each other in GRR, its not like its a connecting facility.

It's not a connecting facility but CO and NW are there as well, and it's possible for someone to get routed that way. I like them at A4, it's definately easier to spot the DL flights that way.  Sad

All of the airlines in the B concourse are hard to catch a lot of the time.

I sent this out to the local group on Yahoo.

Basically, the operations are moving to B concourse and ticket counter is moving down in between the airline counters and the rental counters in the current unused space.

There will be an Allegiant operation to GRR, that DL/DLC will staff for ground and ticketing functions (Similar to Lansing).

The gate they will have on the B concourse will have a jet-bridge AND a door for dual operations that will be much smoother than what they do now.

The mainline ATL flight is gone after the big new schedule, and add two DLC flights to ATL (total of 6 flights to ATL). The CVG mainline flight is to remain.

We will also get a kiosk @ the new ticket counter operation and they are getting upgraded computers. All this on the dawn of the BK filing, but this needs to happen @ GRR!

but when a cancellation occurs its nice to put them on DL or NW.....but now they have to leave security to connect to DL......and yes there are connections......especially from NW to CO.....as odd as it is

I joking brought up the concept of the "SkyTeam Concourse" @ GRR to some ground staff there. It doesn't fit, an operational efficiency would make more sense (having a dual door for DL is more of a benefit than having CO/NW so close).

The other option that I thought would have made sense is put AAEagle over by the rental cars, put CO where AAEagle is now, move SkyWay somewhere else - and put them in the B concourse, then NW/CO/DL could have all of concourse A.

I still think GRR would be best suited for a common-use layout and single security checkpoint as well as out of common use area TSA bag screening. This, of course, would take some mods to the layout.

The recent airport publication indicates about 5 more gates (can't remember) coming to GRR, this is good.

AA was supose to come down to the other side next to the rental cars...but hte space per monthly cost was way to much.....we will be growing more out of GRR as well.....so sooner or later somethng will need to be done with us....maybe switch with US?

I think for the rental car facility side, they could do a dual-side check in for those services.

What I mean is that the Avis counter would be looking directly at the Hertz counter or something to that effect. They don't send luggage back that way, so the only expense would be some seats and payphones. That could allow the airline counters to scoot down, especially if we get Independence Air or JetBlue ErJs.

I guess they could also put the rental cars up by the game room in a 'kiosk' or 'island' setup like they have in the malls.

I still say the B-4 jetbridge will not squat low enough for the CRJ's. I bet we'll see a new or replacement jetbridge at B-4 before the switch is made.

Master plan talks about adding 4 gates to the "A" concourse and 1 to the "B" concourse as well as expanding ground side facilities for additional space. "A" concourse would require an addition to the south in order to add gates. If the terminal access road was moved north, the ramp area on the north side of "B" could get another gate.

I guess I don't really see the push for new gates unless we get additional service from existing or new carriers. There are quite a few times during the day that many gates are empty. Additionally, we could soon be all RJ with the exception of NW and the one DL mainline flight, as UA could pull all their mainline flights with their revamped schedule plans......

Direct KNOBS, maintain 2700' until established on the localizer, cleared ILS runway 26 left approach.

They can't do dual operations at A4? I've walked out on the ramp there (or is there just not enough room to do two flights at the same time?)

Can the airport legally force an airline to switch gates? I suppose that if they wanted to move YX to the B Concourse, they could refuse to renew their lease on their current gate, but they also would risk getting them upset and pulling out. Somehow I doubt we'd see that happening anyway. I would imagine that the number of connections that take place in GRR (especially NW-DL/CO-DL) is so small that it wouldn't really be an issue.

Back to my original question....when is all this going to happen?

**"Can the airport legally force an airline to switch gates?"**

Depends on how the gates are being leased whether through exclusive use agreements, shared-use or preferential use. I am not sure what the agreements with the airlines are at GRR.

I remember at DTW back around 1995 or so when Northwest took over all of C Concourse at the Smith/Davey Terminal. Other carriers were using it such as Delta, TWA, Spirit and a couple Delta Connection carriers. I am thinking since Northwest is and was the big dog in Detroit they would ask for something and they would get it in that case. If I am not mistaken Northwest owned a bunch of the gates in the A concourse at the time which they weren't even using and other carriers were leasing them such as Southwest and U.S. Airways. If I am not mistaken also at DTW that Comair and ASA are in Concourse A at the Smith and Delta is in Concourse B still while they are waiting to move to the Mac.

ComAir is indeed still at concourse A at DTW, they use a stairway at doorway A7 (no jetway there)... ASA, after they axed the DFW-DTW DLX service, no longer operates to DTW but i think they operated from the B concourse lower level gates (B14-B15 I think) ... I'm not sure where Chautauqua operates from on their DLX flights to DTW, but I'll tell you in about a month when I fly them out of there.

The master plan for GRR calls for 5 new gates in the next 10-15 years, and other projects in the nearer future include expansion of the main lobby and ticket counter areas to make room for new desks and for the baggage screening machines, as well as a new parking garage. I hope the parking garage is high enough to spot from  Smile I expect that concourse B will be expanded upon, wherin DL might be able to get more than one gate for its operations.

COex is using B5 in the McNamera Terminal at DTW, aren't they? (or are they using B5 in the Smith?).

That must be a pain for Comair customers connecting to NW flights....must be even more of a pain for DL to operate two ticket counters at DTW.
