"Flight Of The Phoenix"

Sun Oct 24, 2004 9:26 am

I just saw the first trailers of the upcoming release of the re-make of the 1965 classic "Flight Of The Phoneix". I must say that it looks very dissapointing, no doubt that Robert Aldrich and Jimmy Stewart are probably turning over in their graves. In classic Hollywood fashion it has been 'sexed' up with the addition of a female passanger as well a needless battle scene with local nomads and no doubt a ton of other emblishiments and artisic licenses taken with this film. Just check out the trailer at http://www.apple.com/trailers/fox/flightofthephoenix/ and judge for yourself. Well, at least they used the same aircraft type as in the original flick.

You know to be honest, the original was a good dramatic movie, but it always felt to me that there was something missing. For example, the movie is very slow which helped the drama and to feel the doom that the characters felt as they were just waiting to die. Then just as they realize they are going to survive the movie ends suddenly. Something seemed backwards in that to me.

It looks like the remake is going for the action genre instead of the drama. I think this is a good thing. Instead of the boring impending doom of death, this movie seems to be playing on the characters desperation to survive. Hence, a few added elements like the battle scene with the nomads and the takeoff over the cliff adds to the question, "what would you do to survive?"

This is the first I have heard of this movie, and I can't wait to see it. I sure there will be some disapppointment for aviation fans, eg. the propeller coming off and getting imbedded in the fuselage, but what Hollywood movie had ever done aviation justice?
I'm just happy that RR ratings can't be in negative numbers!

Props do come off in flight SAC Flyer.

It could be worse.

There was an episode of the A-Team where the team crashes in a Beech 18 out in the middle of no-where and Murdock has to build an ultralight out of the wreck to go an find help.

As long as they get their plane facts straight. I hope its not one of those cinematic tour de forces where there is syruppy sappy music with synthesizers sung by Celine Dion. And, the plane does not morph from propeller bird, to 737-300, to Airbus, to Boeing 747.  Wink/being sarcastic

The original Airport was pretty good, both dramatically and from an aviation standpoint...

Then just as they realize they are going to survive the movie ends suddenly. Something seemed backwards in that to me.

The reason for that, Sacflyer, is that during the filming, the rebuilt plane crashed, killing the pilot - the well known movie stunt pilot Paul Mantz.

Coincidence that we see this post on the 1 year anniversary of COncrde's retirement? I think not!  Big grin

The trailer looks alright. Most remakes don't do well anyway but least lets give this a chance, no?

Quite honestly, I think the concept behind the original was good but the movie itself was not extraordinary.
