Senator Schumer And Southwest/JetBlue

Mon Oct 25, 2004 9:53 am

With the approaching election New Yorkers are constantly hearing radio ads for Senator Schumer that (among other things) credit him with"bringing" Southwest and JetBlue to New York.

I assume this is at least 90% baloney, but is it 100%? Or if he did somehow induce WN/B6 to come to NY, how did he do it? What did he offer them?

Wherever there's a TV camera, there is Senator Schumer.

To his credit, he does fly Jetblue alot.

Wasn't it the Senator that made/encouraged B6 to fly to BUF, ROC, ALB, and SYR (or whichever cities) in addition to JFK if B6 wanted to be based in NYC?

So maybe he told B6 "You gotta fly to upstate or we won't let you into JFK"? But how could he keep them out?

Didn't he have something to do with JetBlue getting 75 or slots at (then-?)restricted JFK airport

He may have played a role (in terms of B6), but I think that Pataki and Giuliani were the powerhouses.

I doubt he did much for Southwest. I think that the Suffolk county legislators and Pataki were more involved, but I could be wrong.

Well, the did get an unpresidented amount of exception slots at JFK. I'm sure some strings were pulled somewhere. Who was to credit ? ? ? I don't know.
To me, I really couldn't care about B6 and WN. I fly full service carriers and WN has forced AA out of ISP.
I know the LCCs drop the fares but, for the majors to compete they cut services.

Senator Schumer has done a lot for the "Upstate Air rights" including bringing B6 to SYR, ROC, BUF, ALB at least 4x a day from JFK. It was a deal for B6 to get the slots at JFk at the time. Does anyone honestly think that B6 would fly an A320 to BUF, ROC, ALB and especially SYR that many times a day when they aren't flying even to Chicago? Senator Schumer was in ITH a few times this summer in a Cessna 414 w/ pilot and a few aides, nice guy, and boy does he love the camera! "Whats the most dangerous place in DC?" he may have had somethign to do with bringing B6 and WN to the NY area, but he's also one of the people that have tried diligently to get the the VFR corridor over the hudson river closed due to "security issues." as it stands, he's not getting my vote!

State and county politicians made an effort to attract WN to ISP, but that's nothing usual. Politicians in many places all over the country try to bring WN to their local airports. WN ended up serving ISP because they figured (quite correctly, as it turned out) that it would be a lucrative market. Politicians had very little to do with the decision, not that it'll stop them from claiming credit  Smile

In his defense--those slots were gotten for B6 in exchange for upstate ny and vermont.
He is on every first flight they flew to those cities.
He did work a lot with B6.

You may have the financial resources to fly on full-fare carriers without thanking the LCC's for making air travel more affordable, or maybe your employer picks up the tab, but for many many people LCC's (and the lower fares they're forced the legacies to adopt) have made flying possible.

While Schumer did help B6 @ JFK, he had a lot of help from Pataki. The leverage they used the slots for was the ludicrous pricing structure in place from American Eagle who would charge up to $300 one way to Buffalo and Syracuse. I will not vote for old upChuck, But we all should thank him as well as Pataki for the low fares to upstate we now enjoy.

I was gonna say, I didn't know we were flying to ALB...

Thought I had really missed something there... All in good time i guess, once we get the E190s we'll be all over the northeast!

This is political season, guys! I've heard these ads too, and at least they are not the typical negative ads we always seem to see and hear in October.

Did Schumer actually bring JetBlue (and Southwest) to New York? Of course not. But he has long been an advocate of bringing low airfares to upstate New York, which had very little 6 years ago. I believe Schumer was instrumental in getting slots for the fledgling JetBlue back in 1999 or 2000 - part of the deal was that B6 serve BUF, ROC and SYR within their first three years. I would say that has worked out well for both parties.

I'm not going to get on the guy because he is tooting his own horn a little. Sure, the ad does not tell the whole tale but it is not inaccurate either. Frankly, I hear more frequent inaccuracies in a normal Continental ad.

I can't wait for B6 to start service to Albany. We have lost all American Eagle flights to JFK, in fact there is no one flying ALB JFK now. Jet Blue will give us in the Capital District more connection options in addition to those available now on other carriers through EWR and LGA. We can even hope that there will be a few ptp routs that overfly JFK.

On a related note, who is running against Schumer? And who is winning in polls?

Wasn't WN already in ISP before Schumer was elected in '98?
