Iberia 743 And A343 At The Same Time At MIA, Why?

Mon Oct 25, 2004 9:34 pm

Anybody knows why this Saturday both of these aircraft landed within a half hour of each other? The A340 had what I think is the usual flight number but the 747's had an 'R' at the end.

The A340 overnighted and took off at 9 AM Sunday. ATC sent him to runway 12. The nosewheel left the ground when there wasn't much runway left, resulting in probably the lowest takeoff I've ever seen on that runway

The only other time I ever saw an A340 during the day at Miami was in 1998, probably due to a mechanical of the PM flight where they did use the A340 & DC-10. As far as I know the A340 has never substituted the 747 on the afternoon flight.

What a cool sight that must have been!! Ive seen IB 742 & 743 on the ground at the same time but never 747/A343 combo. Maybe their was a mechanical failure causing a stop for one of the aircraft, more than likely the Airbus. Due to the fact, that MIA afternoon flight is flown by the 743. MIA only saw A346 service on the Midnight flight but that flight was discontinued after the fall of the "mini hub".

Get any pics of this scenario?

Hey

I remember seeing a photo here on a.net of a A340 and a 747 IB at MIA,

it looked like the A343 had a hump, very good photo.

Now it seems there are no photos of Iberia A340s at MIA.

haha a hump so they must have been side by side. I myself have tried to look for pictures that I once saw in the database and they're not there anymore.

Hey MIAskies, yes it was a very cool sight indeed! I was at the Squadron restaurant and seeing that thing speeding all the way until the end of the runway made me very worried. It must have cleared the fence by only a few meters.

No I didn't get any pics, I had just crossed the street to get a picture of the VarigLog 727, got back to my car and that's when I saw it, didn't give me time to drive down perimeter, because from where I was, the plane was strongly backlit by the morning sun, so it wouldn't have been that good of a shot.

Hi when a flight has an R it means the flight was recovered, that flight would have had problems on the day it was due to depart and departed the next day.

There was in fact a problem...hence the IB612R flight number. Friday's flight was cancelled as the aircraft due to operate the flight was still undergoing an engine change in La Muñoza. It was recovered on Saturday as IB612R. Since that same 747 was supposed to run Saturday's flight....and in order not to leave the passengers that were supposed to fly the regular IB6123 on Saturday stranded, an A343 was put in place.

Now the reason you saw the A340 departing early Sunday morning was because since there was no A340 crew in Miami...the same crew that brought the plane in on Saturday afternoon had to fly the plane out. Due to crew rest, the flight was scheduled to depart at 9am Sunday morning.

Hope that helps!  Smile/happy/getting dizzy
