Route Maps.. Looking For Template.

Tue Oct 26, 2004 2:03 pm

Does anyone know where to find decent maps that are large .jpg size and are blank of states and the United States so one can create a route map?

I have looked and looked and found many pages with maps, but not the style that you would find in an Airline Inflight Magazine..

Any help is appreacated..

Maybe when you go on your next flight you rip one of those maps out and in photoshop swipe all the lines off it Big grin

Here you go. I am the owner of a VA, and I had this great map, but I can't seem to find it on the web. I'll try to find it on my computer and erase the lines, but I did a search and here you go. Sorry it couldn't be a bit nicer, but if I can erase the lines (there aren't too many) for my routes, I'll email my result to you...

Just erase the top thing on this one...

Hi all,

Actually - let me ask a follow-up question on this topic... is there a program or utility that I can buy or download, where I can enter citypairs and a route map will be created automatically?

I've been looking to find such a program where I can create route maps of where I have flown, etc.... but have not been successful.

Any info much appreciated!

I use Adobe Photoshop to create route maps, here's an example :- http://www.airliners.net/discussions/aviation_hobby/read.main/52586/

I've never come across any software that plots route maps like the ones you can see in inflight magazines. Chances are they also used drawing tools like Photoshop.

If you interested in real-looking world map, a true color earth imagery at 1km resolution, try this:

NASA Blue Marble - http://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/Newsroom/BlueMarble/

Try macromedia flash or freehand for plotting cities or lines. It is better and much easier, since flash and freehand are vector-based graphic applications. Any works, modifications, edits and et cetera can be easily edited, remove and erase without hassle. Then export to Photoshop for labeling and et cetera . Happy trying.  Smile

Microsoft Excel has a map generating utility. Just click "Insert," select "Object," then click "Microsoft Map."

Most versions of Excel since 97 have it, though it must be selected specifically when you install it.

Anyway, you can resize the image to a proportion you like working in, then right-click, copy, and paste into an image editing program like Paint, Paint Shop Pro, or Photoshop.

I've made all my route maps with MS streets and trips. It uses great circle automatically useint the straight line feature. Also the world map in Encarta has worked the same way. A full topographoc map for world views will be a bit more difficult to find but I seem to remember that the Encarta version and possibly the Excel (probably same) as mentioned by Elwood would work.
