Qantas Opps At LAX?

Wed Oct 27, 2004 6:38 am

Can anyone summarize Quantas's operations at LAX? From the photo below, it seem that they have quite a sizable outfit there. Thanks!

QANTAS ops at LAX, brief summary:

2 SYD-LAX-SYD non stops, QF11 & 107, daily
1 MEL-LAX-MEL non stop, QF93, daily
1 SYD-BNE-LAX-BNE-SYD, QF 175, 3 weekly
1 SYD-AKL-LAX-AKL-SYD, QF 25, daily
1 SYD-LAX-SYD non stop QF149 3 weekly
1 LAX-JFK-LAX non stop QF107/108, 3 weekly
(QF8, the day time LAX-SYD is currently 3 weekly)

In summary you will have between 4 and 6 QF B744 in LAX during the day, All flights arrive during the morning, spend the day and depart in the late evening (except QF8 which leaves at lunch time, and QF107/108 which is the JFK tag, which operates during the day). This is because of the SYD curfew and arrival times/connections at SYD/MEL.

It is simple, QF flies its 747s mostly at night so they sit around all day. They arrive in the morning in LAX and wait out the entire day there before going back to Australia at night with the exception of one plane that leaves for SYD at 1pm and the continuation flight that goes from LAX-JFK. The fleet utilization isn't that great for flights to the south pacific because the planes mostly fly at night. The number of QF planes in LAX has steadily increased over the years since NZ quit flying SYD-LAX and the 744ERs came along to fly MEL-LAX. The planes are still based in Australia, but they just sit out for 12 hours during the day. NZ usually has at least 1 744 at LAX during the day also.

With the long downtime do the same crews fly them back after 8+ hours of sleep?

I am not sure about the crew rules, but interested to find out. As far as their ops at LAX, there has even been talk about another LAX-MEL flight, as QF 93 already goes out full every day (and it is impossible, at least on the US end, to get ever a reasonably discounted ticket to OZ). The funny thing is that it was UA who started that route, but dropped it when they knew they would lose out to QF with the 744ER. Now UA goes LAX-SYD-MEL.
Also, QF has rather significant ground ops at LAX (with that many flights, it just becomes more efficient) and they service BA's 2 flights to LHR as well as QF's.

of course the same crew's don't fly them back, they are left there due to curfew in Syndey and onward connection times being to long, so with the night flights ex LA the flights arrive in Syd in the morning which allows instant connections.

i think the layover for crew is 2 days.

I just came in today with QF94 direct to MEL from LAX. Since it is a southbound flight it wasn't that full, still on the 744ER. What is the weight restriction on flights southbound on the ER?
Another thing, what days of the week is the QF107/108 to JFK?
Plus did UA ever fly direct to MEL? I thought it was always through AKL.

how long was the flight time from LA-Mel, i'm doing it in december, the ER is used as it has no restrictions, maybe just a quiet flight.

Would love to see the MEL flight extend to ORD to connect with AA, but Iraq halted that. Someday market conditions might improve.

SARS halted it, and the research done by QF found the market is to depressed, i doubt you'll see it ever extended to ORD.

If ORD - Australia is depressed, DFW - Australia must be a dream.

well, if they were a dream and viable then they'd be serviced, i'd say the fact that there not in operation say's it all.

Yes UA flew non-stop LAX-MEL from December 1999 until April 2001!

In response to reply 1 QF25 originates in BNE rather than SYD except when the aircraft positions back to SYD and a new aircraft positions from the other direction.

MEL-LAX will soon get an additional 2 weekly flights with 2 class 744's.

Hi guys,
In regards to slip times,
We usually get aroud 33hours up in LAX but it can vary. It depends what pattern you are on.
On my recent AKLLAXAKL i had 62hours up in LAX so decided to go to Las Vegas and San Diego... both great cities!!

Cheers
