Why No 744s For Emirates?

Wed Oct 27, 2004 8:31 am

Hello All,

I am curious as to why Emirates has opted not to order the 747-400. They clearly have a need for the capacity by ordering every other large widebody in existance. They have even ordered 43 A380s, clearly showing their need for ultra high capacity airframes. So my question is, prior to ordering the A380, why would Emirates choose to not get the 747? Would it not be profitable for them to at least lease some 744s until the A388 arrives? Mr curiosity in the subject has been growing after seeing their recent fleet acquisitions and orders (as well as potential orders) for future aircraft, I am rather surprised that they havn't utilized the capacity and range of the 747-400.

I think because the U.A.E. is to small to fly them in. I'm just kidding- and in fact I LOVE the U.A.E.!

I think because they have all their new services and seat products and sutch, and they have a big contract with Airbus for their 346s.

Although a 744 for EM would be kool- I personally think they're better of with the 346. It has wayyyy better fuel compacity to carry the scurrying people out of the middle east!

Once again!...just kidding! (I, think)

Interesting question.

Perhaps it is because they are a growing airline, and only recently have seen the need for a plane bigger than the 777?

I think they do have some B744 freighters flying for them though.

Sorry, I should have clarrified - passenger 747-400s. This also brings up an interesting topic, would EK be interested in the 747Adv? As Boeing is touting, this would be a good aircraft to opporate between the size capacity of the A388 and the 773. Just some thoughts.

The 773ER and A346 are newer in design, technology, and fit into EK's fleet better than a stand-alone 744.
EK already is an operator for A332, A343, & A345 which have pilot-commonality and engine-commonality with A345.
The 773ER fits with existing 772, 772ER, & 773 though engines will be different.
However with the selection of GE/PW engine for A380 there will some synergies with the 773ER engine as the core will be similar.
Sounds like a very good strategy for a very well run airline.

If EK were going to order B 744s they would done it between 1994-96 when they ordered dozens of A 332s and B 777s but didnt because at that time they werent concentrating on capacity but instead focused on increasing route frequencies which they thought would be better off in the long run such as having a daily flight to a key city with B 777s rather than 3-4 weekly B 744s.

Though EK was pretty well known between 94-97 in the airline world, their demand scales and pax numbers on almost all their routes barring LHR and India wouldnt have needed the extra pax capacity offered by the B 744. In anycase, they must have 100% done a study on the B 744 and found that operating a 2 class B 773 with 434 seats or even a 3 class B 773 with 380 seats would be a more cost efficient and profitable option to fly on long haul and medium haul routes.

Because they have the 773. I love the 744 and I hope the 747Advanced will be a big hit, but at the moment, the 773 and 346 are the newer and more modern machines around.

But EK always has ordered the A380

It is queer though. I always thought that EK wanted purely Airbus fleets for PAX and thus stayed away from ordering Boeing planes. But the 777 fleet proved me wrong. Do you think they will trade them in like SQ? Like A343 vs 777 and Airbus or either Boeing buys it out for them?
