First AirTran 717 XM Installation Under Way

Wed Oct 27, 2004 3:09 pm

Along with the other great news of the day, our first aircraft to receive XM Satellite Radio will be aircraft 778. Flight 8778 was ferried from ATL to MIA on 10/26 to have the work done. No word on the ETC or when the aircraft will be back on line. Lots of great things going on around here!

Now that's what I like to hear! Bring it to BWI and I will list myself on this birds entire slew of flights. With a push of the FTWEB plane tracker, I can see myself at a window seat even if it is row 30F tuning into those old school oldies from BWI-ATL-MLI-ICT-MCO-ATL-BWI and wherever else this bird is intended to go. Great flying with REAL MUSIC CHOICES and not some lip sinching minx croaking syruppy lyrics is up there with great you know what, food, schnapps and partying. Cool!  Smokin cool

Excellent... This also happens to be a former TWA jet. Ship 778 is N936AT and was formerly N401TW.

I know, it's an exciting time for any FL lover.

About how long to they estimate it'll take for the whole fleet to be outfitted w/ XM?

I do not know if anything has changed but I recall them stating that they would be outfitted by the end of the year. But on the other hand I also thought they said they would start the install in the summer. Well its almost Nov. and the 1st one is just going in so I dont know if that still stands.

Well, it will probably take 1-2 weeks to get it all wired up and installed. Plus they will have to test it and check it and make sure all of the bugs are worked out, so we are looking at about 2-3 weeks before the 1st one is complete.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I thought I read somewhere that they could do 4 a day. Surely they wouldn't take a jet out of service for 2 weeks just for a radio.

Well the inflight group still doesn't have headsets, nor have we had any direction on what to do with this new service yet, so I'm thinking it'll prob be closer to 4 weeks before we roll this out.

This isn't "just a radio". This is 117 Radios, The Satellite Receiver, the Wiring that they have to install. The testing of the systems, making sure it doesn't catch fire, or cause any problems. So yeah, 4 weeks sounds appropriate. There is alot of work to be done on something new. Now.. Once they get this one going, and know exactly what to do, it may get down to 1 week for 1 plane.

Plus they have to train the crews on how it works (minimal but precise process).

As BR715 said, I'm sure once they get the first couple installed and work out the bugs, the process will move more quickly. They'll figure out how to streamline the process and make it more efficient.

I just spoke with our aircraft routing department. The first aircraft is due back in service on 11/3. Thats about one week of down time to complete the installation. No word on when the system will be operational yet.
