Delta's New Interiors

Thu Oct 28, 2004 2:07 pm

I've heard that DL now has aircraft with the new interiors. Does anyone have any pictures of the new look?

Hey Jeff,

For right now, I think there is one MD-90 flying around with the new interior ...
there were some pics posted by a member, and I apologize for being so lazy to find them ... I'm on the run right now, I'll find them when I get back, unless someone else beats me to it!

There are a number of MD-88s in the new interior. I got one on Tuesday DFW-CVG. I wanted to take a pic, but I had a tight connection, and did not want to miss it  Sad

I finally found a photo, courtesy of Delta Air Lines and from their website:

I'm not overly impressed... Hopefully the seats look better in real life. The coach seats look kind of boring... I actually like the seats with leather surrounds and cloth in the center. I think they're more comfortable.

I took one from Jax to Atl two Tuesdays ago. Not very impressed. Looks kind of cheap. However, if it makes economic sense to them, then Bravo.

They look like bland, featureless covers over existing seats.... I was expecting more.

I flew on an MD-88 last week with the new interior. We were on an ATL-LIT segment and the flight was delayed. Gate agent simply said that there was a delay in the "security sweep" of the aircraft. When we got on the plane, about 35 minutes after the originally scheduled departure, we were on an MD-88 with new interior. The captain said that the original aircraft had a hydralic problem and they had pulled this aircraft from the hanger; it had just been fitted with the new interior. We were the first to fly on that aircraft on the new interior.

Personally, I did not like the new First seat covers. The coach was OK, they are leather seat covers, but they are rather bland and plain.

I saw the seats before they were installed and they do seem to be a nice shade of blue that should brighten up the cabin. Hopefully they are comfortable.

One of the Delta experts here at a.net posted about the new Delta interiors a few weeks ago....

There is only a few aircraft (maybe 2 or 3 MD80s) with the complete new interior look, however quite a few more of the MD80s just have the new seat covers without the other improvements. I apologize for not knowing more about it, but it does seem that there is some confusion on this issue.

I think that the FC covers are temporary, and that new seats are in the works. So don't judge it too much based on the FC.

Right now there is only one 88 with a complete new interior. The next two are in HMV and will be done in 2-3 weeks. The mod line has done some partial mods with include carpets and seat cover changes as well as some other changes. I don't know haow many have been don by that line.

What does an entirely "complete new interior" entail? Which aircraft will recieve the new interiors?

The aircraft that will be fitted with the new interior first will be the ones that affect the most Delta customers(i.e.-biggest airplane fleets). That will mostly include, MD-88's, 767-300's, and 757's. Once they are all completed, and provided that people are happy with the new interiors, they may move on to other fleet aircraft.

I know Ship 9000 was the first one, and ship 9005 is fresh out of getting it and starts flying either today or tommorrow.... not sure of any others.

The goal was passenger comfort and the new seats are more comfortable than the old ones. DL wasn't going to put Picasso canvas' on the seats. Unfortunately the more color used the more expensive the seat and DL didn't have the money to make the seats both appealing and comfortable so comfort won out. Although many people do comment the new interior is wonderful so it is appealing to a lot of people.

What does an entirely "complete new interior" entail?

Everything replaced. Side walls, lights, seat covers, bathroom flooring, galley flooring, carpet, overhead panels, row markers, A/C vents. Whatever you can think of on the interior has been replaced. To the normal passenger most would think they are on a brand new aircraft.

Here's a link I found, after a little searching:

http://myaviation.net/search/search.php?view=&where=MSA9IDEgQU5EIGVtYWlsPSd3Y2pldGJveUBob3RtYWlsLmNvbScg&&nr_of_results=145&first_this_page=30&page_limit=10&sort_order=DESC&order=id&thumbnails=&engine_version=&nr_pages=15&page=

The pics are by an A.net photographer named Hank Nix based out of ATL...apparently he's a DL employee. Scroll down the page and you'll see the new interior shots. He's got some other good pictures as well.

Hope this helps.

How long is this process going to take? Will it be a while before all the M88s, 767300s and 757s are completed?

Here are some pictures of the new Delta MD-90 interior.

I must say; the new all-leather seats are awsome!
I especially liked the first class seats!

Ship 9005 did not get a new interior. The next full mod to be finished will be 9006. It looks like it is due out on the 9th. The full mod actually gets the old sidewalls and ceilings put back but they are all repainted so they look new. The lavs and galleys allso get a new look. The overhead panels get redone with new LED reading lights.

These pictures look better than those posted on DL's website. I think the new LED lights will be cool. It's interesting that the Row Markers below the overhead bins are exactly like those I saw on a DL 738 a few months ago that had a "Test" new interior, only those were green and these appear to be dark blue? Sure makes the interior look brighter. Too bad my next four flights are 738s, 757s, and 767s...

One other thing... Why are the seat bottoms so flat? In my Acura, they're curved out nice for my butt...lol Wouldn't it be cool if they countoured the seat bottoms to be more comfortable. I always find the flat ones to be somewhat annoying.

These seats/row markers have a very song like appearance... so might this commonality be to save money, or could it be hinting at something a little more intense?

I dont mean to suggest something silly...just worth mentioning.

I flew on the new interior on ship N939DL [99% sure on the reg.] on Tuesday DL flight 474 in f/c and it was excellent. 1997 colors with the hard line widget. Very clean, comfy, soft colors. Even the 'new interior smell' - like that of leather treatment. Parts of the cabin were old elements - like the "forward lavatory occupied" sign.

I welcome the new interior, even though this was the 'over top of old surfaces' configuration.

FlyingDoc:

A couple of years ago I also had a hydraulic leak on the DL MD-88 that I was supposed to depart out of LIT. I was supposed to be going to BHD for vacation but all other flights out of LIT were sold out so we took the first flight to ATL the next morning in f/c on a new 738!!

Since they really couldn't help the MX problems it wasn't a really good reason to stop flying DL though is it?  Smile

Personally, I think it looks pretty nice. I would rather have the leather than the cloth, but there is somethign lesss business-like about it than cloth. I am not familiar with Delta's other first interiors, yet I think a plain black leather would look nicer than the combi-color on these particular seats.

Well the new interior may be easier to clean as you have children that get sick and it gets into the cloth ones, or accidents by other pax...but they are really cheap looking. a little extra stitching or something needs to be added... notice the old paper head rest that velcroes to the back appear to be gone

The seats do look better than NW's first class, all cloth seats. They are growing on me. I can't wait to see them in person  Big grin I wonder... How will they look on the wider 757 or 737 first class seat? The first seats are a bit narrower on the MD A/C and the 767.

I like the new interiors, a freshing up from the old boxy look although the seats could use a little more work...
