Saudia Arabian MD-11 In SAT

Fri Oct 29, 2004 6:33 am

Hi,

I was down in SAT this past weekend, my first trip to the airport there, and I was surprised to see the extensive maintenance facilities that they have. One of the aircraft that was there was particularly surprising, a Saudi Arabian MD-11 was parked out west of the passenger terminals outside of a hanger. Does anyone have any idea what it is doing there? I realize that routine maintenance is a likely possibility, but I was surprised that it would be flown so far for that reason (even though I know that it happens a bit). Does anyone know if it is being sold? Or perhaps converted to a freighter? Do they have that capability in SAT? Most of the pictures of Saudi Arabian MD-11s on this site are of freighters. However, there were windows and no cargo markings on the aircraft. Anyone know? Thanks.

It may have been one of the Royal Family airplanes. They keep them things running around alot so it may have been close to SAT and they sent it there.

Saudia doesn't operate any passenger MD11's, the one you saw will be one of the 2 operated for the Royal Family in full Saudia colours, SAT Sakhalin Airlines (Russian Federation)">HZ-HM7 and SAT Sakhalin Airlines (Russian Federation)">HZ-AFA1. I believe that SAT Sakhalin Airlines (Russian Federation)">HZ-HM7 is currently stored.

Cheers,

Sorry, that should have read:

The 2 aircraft in question are HZHM7 (currently stored?) and HZAFA1.

Cheers,

Saudi Arabian does its interior and fitting in SAT. When the King took his first 747-300, it was fitted in San Antonio.

I thought that SAT Sakhalin Airlines (Russian Federation)">HZ's MD-11's were all cargo.
Keep on truckin'...

I have seen this aircraft several times over the past couple of years here. It seems like it is there for long periods of time and disappears for short periods before it pops up again. I think I began seeing it in the early part of last year with these high frequencies at SAT.

Thanks for the info. I am kicking myself for not getting a look at the registration number and writing it down.

Luxair,

You gotta love how this site does that when you type in certain letter combinations!

The plane is parked at San Antonio Aerospace, formerly Dee Howard. It is ostensibly there for refurbishment, but many months have gone by now and it still hangs around. I took this shot of its tail hanging out of the hangar:

The Saudi's owe San Antonio Aerospace money for an extended "C" check on this airplane. Since they haven't paid, there is a sheriff's lien on the airplane red stickers and all. It's been sitting there now for almost a year.
No ticket, no laundry!!
