Next New City For Southwest?

Does any one know what cities are being considered? Seems their expansion plans have cooled off a bit. Is Trenton, NJ still a possibility? I know they start Albany, NY in May.The state of Virginia has been courting them for quite awhile. I think PHF (Newport News,VA), would be a good choice, good population radius, alot of military travelers, and a nice uncongested facility and alternative to Norfolk.Also, has West Palm Beach, FL been totally ruled out? I happen to know there are 2 available gates at this facility that have gone unoccupied for some time. Although, the landing and rental fees at PBI are quite expensive. I know it has been looked at by Southwest, but hadn't heard anything since. Anyone on this forum have any input?

I really wouldnt place too much money on Trenton. Id say if any city in that area has the best chance it would be Allentown PA (ABE) Other cities with a chance are ORF (better facities than PHF) and possibly RIC and maybe another upper NY city like BUF,SYR or ROC.
Experience is what you get when what you thought would work out didn't!

Don't discount Trenton just yet. It's incredibly close to Philadelphia, and it would open a huge market for WN. Trenton would appeal to anyone in the east/southeast portion of Philadelphia, while ABE would appeal to the north/northwest area of Philadelphia. Another possibility is Wilmington, DE. The city hasn't seen commercial jet service in years, but that's not stopped Southwest before, has it? All three of these airports are ripe markets just waiting for Southwest to pick them.

My prediction still stands tight on Pittsburgh, though. US Airways at Pittsburgh is a big disaster just looking for a time to happen. Wolf wants to pull out of there, probably because Pittsburghers are thrifty. That's a perfect market for Southwest. I'd say that Pittsburghers are cheap, but since I'm one of them, I won't. :-) The city and county offered to build US Airways a new maintenance facility for the Airbus fleet. Wolf almost-politely snubbed the offer. If they offered to build a maintenance facility for Southwest, watch out!

I'd expect Des Moines to be looked at closely. Also there's an old Air Force Base in Bedford, Massachusetts not too far from Boston that's currently being used by a commercial shuttle service. I think the name of the airline is Shuttle America. I don't know that the airport could handle 737s or the traffic Southwest would bring, but it may be something they'd look into.

I think Southwest should serve Wichita, Kansas. I have heard no plans for having Wichita as a destination, though. Ever since Vanguard left a couple of years ago, Wichita has had problems with high fares. There are no low-fare carriers in Wichita, but I heard that there is a start-up called Braniff Airways should begin in June. It would be nice for Southwest to serve Wichita, though.

Southwest Should Serve Fresno

I'd like to see Southwest serve Fresno, CA.
There hasn't been any decent service there since PSA was executed by USAir.
There are scores of Brasilia flights (mostly to LAX and SFO) via United Express and SAAB 340 flights with American Eagle.
I think America West Express flies to PHX with CRJ's and American has an MD-80 flight to DFW.
That's about it.
There is tremendous road traffic to/from Fresno going to the Los Angeles and Bay Areas. The city has been growing like a weed for several years. If WN were to come in and offer service to SJC or OAK, LAX and LAS (which is a popular destination from FAT), they would make a killing. Also, Fresno is planning on building a new terminal to replace the demilitarized bombed out shell of a terminal currently in place.

If WN ever decides to enter the Colorado market, I'm sure that it would be via COS.
I'm only amazed that they didn't rush in there after WestPac went to Denver to die.

I think that MKE (Milwaukee) might be the next Southwest city. MKE even made some of thier gates to Southwest code to court them to MKE. Denver is out of the question, because of United and Frontier. I can say too much about Trenton, but another Florida city could be a possiblity.

Intersting topic for conversation, Herb Kelleher is so unpredictable when deciding where to fly. I read soewhere recently that over 100 cities have requested Southwest service in the last year or so. If I had to put money down on it, there would be two distinct areas that, in my mind, beg for Southwest service:

1) the mid-Atlantic region: I see SW serving Charlotte, Columbia, Greenville/Spartanburg, Charleston area before too long.

2) the upper midwest: I'm envisioning Milwaukee, Minneapolis, and Des Moines.

In order, I'd probably go with GSP first, then MKE, CAE, GSP, MSP, CHS, and CLT.

Comments on DEN and ICT: SW tried DEN years ago, and it didn't work, too many hassles there. As far as ICT goes, they've been trying for years to get SW in there (because their fares are so high...very little competition there since the Braniff days...), but one sticking point has been the Wright Amendment (no DAL nonstop/direct service to points outside TX, LA, MS, NM, and OK until recently extended to MS, AL, and Kansas).

Now that I've written this, I think Herb might just finally give the go-ahead to Wichita. and it would be about time.

Word is they'll add at least one destination west of the Mississippi. My bet is for Springfield, Missouri.. got the Branson crowd there.. it wouldn't be a big destination, maybe a flight to LAS or PHX, several to STL, a few to Florida, and one or two to MDW or BWI. But I do think it'd be a viable destination for them, particularly if they add it to the Southwest Vacations lineup.

WN won't go to a fortress hub, but wants to be near metro areas to attract fliers. Much as they did near Boston (MHT and PVD), and NYC (at ISP) I think ABE and Trenton to attract traffic from PHL. Maybe Greensboro, even if its only 80 miles from RDU. They need more 737 deliveries to start new services.

I guess I'm just not as enamored with Southwest as everyone else seems to be. It took all day for me to get from Tampa to Portland, and frankly, it wasn't worth the money. I would now say that I'd gladly pay a little higher (it's really not much more) to have even one less stop, and legitimate service on board...

What was wrong with the service? All the times i have flown Southwest the service has been great. I even flew on a 4 hour trip from ABQ-MCO and we even played games. So i can't agree with you on the service part. Now for the scheduling i can, for my dad it took about 8 hours to get from ABQ-SEA.

Expansion to ORF is inevitable. Va Beach is a boomtown. Entire SMSA area has nearly 3 million, with lots of military traveling year round. Bet on it. The other places in the Southeast(Charleston, RIC, etc) simply don't have the population or predicted growth. No future either.

One possible city under consideration that wasn't mentioned is Harrisburg, Pennsylvania (MDT).

It would be nice to see service started to springfield Missouri (I was from there) since the fares there are very high. I do wonder how many people they would fetch out Springfield, in the past few years Branson has seemed to be slipping a little in popularity. Right now if you wanted to fly southwest close to there you would have to go Kansas City, or St Louis and that is almost a 4 hour drive. It would be nice but I just dont see it happen in the near future there are to many other "big" cities that Southwest has yet to tap into.

Stlbham-NW "Jetlink" will begin service to Springfield/Branson as soon as the new CRJs are delivered. Hope that helps the high fares.
Ducker- What do you mean when you say "Southwest won't go near a fortress hub? Looks to me like they have pretty nice and successful operations at DTW, STL, SLC, and IAH, fortress hubs for NW, TW, DL, and CO, respectively, not to mention MDW near ORD and of course DAL near DFW.
Back on the topic, as much as I wish WN would begin service to MSP, the smart money goes to MKE. Mitchell Airport has went as far as to paint a gate in Southwest's colors, hoping for the low fares to enter Wisconsin, and I think they will make good use of that gate. Flights to STL, MDW, and PHX are a good possibility if it happens.

I meant that WN probably go to hubs such as PIT or CLT, where a dominant carrier such as US hold lots of slots, and WN couldn't offer the frequencies as they expanded, and possible ATC delays. As for STL, Southwest entered when TW was in bad shape, and was able to establish a presence. WN doesn't have that many flights to IAH, but still has more ops into Hobby. Southwest wants to enter underutilized airports, with proximity to population centers adequate road access, few carriers, and few ATC delays. Lots of cities have that, DSM, ABE, TTN, ORF, GSO, COS (to attract pax from fast growing metro southern Denver area, where COS is not that much more of a drive than to DIA).

I am betting on Trenton OR Allentown and Norfolk. But then again, I never imagined they would be at my home airport, Hartford (BDL), but WN is doing very well here.

You never know what Herb's up to.

I think that Canada could get a few routes with wn. There is a westjet here that follows the same plan. I hope they come up here to YYZ,YUL,YHM,YOW,YWG,YVR,YYC,YEG. Those are the closest citites to the border. What do you think?
