New United Express Area At ORD

Sat Oct 30, 2004 4:29 am

Any word on when the Express area in ORD is going to be updated and people aren't standing around like cattle? Take a walk on the American Eagle side....it's awesome. We need something open and light the way it is over there.

I agree that the difference between T2 (United Express) and T3, Concourse G (American Eagle) is night and day. I thought I read in an article from a year back that there were some updates planned for T2 but they were put on hold. I'm wondering whether anything's planned for the terminal (other than the FACE project).

AFAIK, long term T-2 is supposed to become a FIS facility for UA and AA to share. That would, I guess, put Express back in Terminal 1, perhaps at the south end of Concourse C. That area of T-1 really isn't that much better.

UAX for sure needs a major overhaul in the gate area. If things are going to be happening....routes added.....more passengers passing through, UAX needs to have a much better boarding area. Things have gotten so much better in ORD, now lets get a facelift!!

A FIS facility? Am I mistaken or would that be an international arrivals facility for UA and AA? If that's what happens with T2 then I imagine some drastic changes will be needed to make the terminal suitable to handle international arrivals and house customs and immigration.

There has been talk of renovating T2 to make it more passenger friendly. I have heard talk of opening the area b/n T2 and T3, (where the playground and post office are) and setting up gates and jetbridges off of that area. So far all ideas have involved $$$ and the loss of parking spaces, both of which are in short supply. I'm not sure how much of the $ UA would have to put up for any expansion, but I'm sure it's pretty far down the priority list now. Space is like gold there and UAX can ill-afford to lose anymore parking spots since there is very little gate rest as it is on the existing spaces. We'll see though since something needs to be done!

Now I have to dig up the links...

See http://www.flychicago.com/ohare/about/about_world_gateway.shtm

It needs funding, but has been approved by the FAA (finding of no significant impact). Once the $$ show up, it is happening.

they unfortunately can't put jetways off of the main terminal to the ramp without a new gate area built. Below the terminal floor area is the bag room, then you have a 2 lane roadway & then a large concrete fence. They threw the idea around a couple years ago but scrapped it until the DOA figures out what they are going to do with Terminal 2, and considering UA has the lease on T2 and they're in bankruptcy, I doubt they'll be doing much to it.

Also something to consider is the fact that since UA pretty much owns the E/F gates, they also house other airlines. Why would United put up a pretty penny, like they did in the late 80s with the Terminal for Tomorrow/AKA T1, for other airlines to share in its expenditures?

Look for a midfield concourse where the AFB used to be housed.

Is there still a sofa below the stairs at F2? I would catch agents down there sleeping between banks! Boy they hated me! I soon found out they'd go over to the old gate area between the E & F gates (was a US gate with no jetway) and take "long breaks" over there... but someone told me they've gutted it and its all now office space.

There was also talk of UA requesting to take over the old Signature ramp on the East end of the airfield in order to build an RJ terminal. Don't know what became of that idea however.

What Cubsrule said about T2 is correct. That is/was one of the facets of the World Gateway Program, in which T2 would be an FIS faciltiy for both AA an UA, and all the other domestic airline currently using 2 would be moved to a newly built terminal. Those plans are on indefinite hold right now, especially since the runway reconfiguration project is a much higher priority.
