How Does An Airline Decide Which A/c To Park?

Sat Oct 30, 2004 4:39 pm

Was just looking through some of the pictures of parked aircraft out in the deserts, and noticed that there are often many types from an individual airline.

How does, say NW, decide which of its DC-9's to park and which to keep flying?

Debate is what you put on de hook when you want to catch de fish.

Has to do with the age of the plane I think...and maybe they just phase out their planes one by one as not to lose their whole fleet on one go...

Some of the considerations made when retiring an airplane or fleet include;

1. Is a heavy check with considerable costs coming due?

2. Are there expensive required modifications; due to changes in regulations, maintenance program, airworthiness directives, etc.; needed to maintain airworthiness.

3. Is the airplane leased? When does the lease period end?

4. General age of the airplane in terms of flight cycles and hours.

5. General condition of the airplane.

6. Cost of operation per flight hour.

7. Cost of replacement.

8. Current utilization. High? Low?
