A camera battery caught part of a seat on fire?? What did this have to do with the aircraft?? Just extinguish it and keep on going.

It's probably Secret Service procedure to land after an incident no matter how insignificant it seems to us. Given it's 3 days to the election where he could become VP of the US it's not that surprising.

I wonder if the photographer was kicked off the flight? Must have been a serious battery!

I would bet that there was a seroius burning smell that got everybodys attention beforte it was discovered that the battery was the cause. I would think by that time the plane had already diverted.

the idea of a trial lawyer as our VP really REALLY scares me. I can live with Mr. Kerry as president, but geezus, Edwards as VP

Well duh!

If there is a fire onboard I sure hope they would land in a safe place to figure out what was going on.

Besides, isn't it some FAA regulation to land after a fire?

"the idea of a trial lawyer as our VP really REALLY scares me"

But having a VP thats a former executive from a company that makes most of its money from the govt DOESNT scare you?

Glad to hear the incident was nothing serious. I imagine a burning smell in the cabin was a bit stressfull for those on board.

Does the secret service protect presidential candidates who aren't president?

I do believe they protect all candidates for President until the election.. especially during the election year...

JohnJohn Edwards has had Secret Service protection since he announced he was running for President..

PFlybyguy,
During presidential elections, once it becomes fairly clear who the opposing canidates will they are offered Secret Service protection. Just think of the implications of being able to easily off your opponent who does not have the protection the incumbent has.

John Kerry and John Edwards started recieving secret service protection three days after Howard Dean dropped from the race, when It was clear that one of them was going to be candidate, I wonder if the Secret Service has to protect Nader or the libertarian guy?

The USSS protects major (read:their loss would have a major effect on the psychology of democracy) presidential candidates beginning 120-days prior to the general election.

Once they receive a nomination, they're afforded full protections of the Secret Service, yes.

I don't think the Libertarians have enough votes to qualify. Nader, too.

I am pretty sure Nader has had some secret service too. Perhaps not as much, but I am pretty sure that at least during the 2000 election I saw pictures of him with secret service guys. But, he had more following back then too, so I dont know.

So he's a trial lawyer, so WHAT, you want somebody who knows how to fight and win for your interests especially on the international front. He knows how to talk to different constituencies and convince them of his position, if he gets elected his position will be that of the United States of America, if anything its a good thing.
