Unfortunately, it's gone forever as an airfield. What a mess that whole situation was!!! Boo Daley!!

Oh sure there is one way to recover the airfield, in your dreams, not to be a smart mouth.  Smile/happy/getting dizzy
You got to be careful if you don't know where you're going, because you might not get there.

HA! Don't think he wouldn't try for it, too! (If it meant getting Meigs re-opened)

Is There No Possible Way To Recover Meigs Field?

Sun Oct 31, 2004 10:22 am

Hello,

I was wondering if there is any possible chance Meigs field will be rebuilt. If not, will they ever build another airport like it in Chicago?

I guess it could be done but I guess Mayor Daley sp.?? damaged the runway pretty bad, inoperable I think.

After 9/11 and the fears of aircraft being used to attack urban areas, I would suspect that Megis Field will never be reopened.

I was at the planitarium over the summer and took pics of the field. I still haven't uploaded them from the camera. I'll do it in the morning and post them.

If I were the mayor of Chicago, I'd close O'Hare, Midway, Palwaukee, etc. because those could be a threat too. Aircraft take off from there headed over downtown every day.

I'd say having a 4.4nm radius of closely monitored and positively controlled airspace (ie: class D with an operating control tower) would make the downtown area safer.

Those were not the real reasons the airport was closed...Mayor Daley has wanted a park on that land for years, and he found a convenient excuse by hiding behind 9/11. The FAA and Homeland Security departments reamed Daley for his actions...he never contacted any security experts for analysis, it was just his cover story. He even admitted it a few months after the demolition was complete.
That being said, I see no way of the airport ever being reopened. The costs to recover the airport now would be enormous, and unfortunately outside of the aviation community there is not enough public interest to get a reopening movement started.

I think they should open up a seaplane base right next to the land just to spite 'ol Dick.

I was actually just there a couple weeks ago. It's now filled with a bunch of pretty wild flowers (and I say "pretty wild flowers" in the most sarcastic way possible).

Mayor Daley has wanted a park on that land for years, and he found a convenient excuse by hiding behind 9/11. - ORDflyer

I thought the park was just the coverup behind the coverup. Didn't he have an ulterior motive of building a Casino there?

Glad you brought that up, I wasn't thinking about that before. There are some media theories in Chicago and elsewhere that the land will eventually be used for a casino. He has made his desire known that he wants a casino in the city, especially to help attract conventions which are heading to Vegas more and more. The former Meigs land is very close to the McCormick Place convention center, so I would't rule out the possibility of a casino/hotel complex going up there.

I beleive i saw an aerial of it a while back and there were huge chucks carved in the shape of the letter x all down the runway purposely to keep any aircraft from remotely trying to land there.
i can see for 80 miles

Yes, they came in and carve huge x's all the way down the runway. And now its been removed completely. Looks like a jogging track or something is being put in.

Unfortunately Meigs will never be reopened. I doubt if there will ever be enough interest by any group powerful enough to change "hizzoner - jr."'s
actions as regareds to Meigs. The most prevelant thinking is that all of the smokescreens where puts up so when the smoke cleared he could get the legislature to approve a casino an the lakefront. That (and I don't KNOW for sure) has probably been his thinking since casinos popped up all around the Chicago area. It was a great tragedy and a really underhanded way to demolish a great civil airport.

Are you implying that the legislature is going to give the city an 11th casino license? I think the chances of that happenning are about as great as the chances of the (White) Sox winning the series next year.

I would love to see someone fly over Meigs Field towing a banner reading "Re-open Meigs Field airport". Would this be allowed or is there some sort of no-fly-zone imposed down there now? I don't think the authorities would be too happy if someone did that, even if they weren't breaking any laws.

Yes, Of course their is a way to get Meigs back.

After midnight, take a wrecking crew down to Herr Mayors office, gut the place and pile the furniture (after impounding the files) into barricades. Erect giant X's at all entrances to the parking lot and block anyone from coming to work. Then declare Daley a danger to and interference with interstate commerce. Fine him and him alone the full costs discussed in the Government investigation. Make him pay restitution to return the airport to it's prior condition before he broke any laws.

They need a regime change in Chicago. Daley thinks he owns the town and can do what he wants. I hate seeing all the Daley signs at ORD when I'm there.

As a Chicagoan, I am Democrat, but do you think I will ever vote for the mayor again? HA!

The city may have used airport improvement funds for O'Hare to help demolish Meigs. The FAA is investigating and may hit the city for something like $4.5 mil to repay the money and fine the city. I say hit them for all they can (and yea, I know it is coming out of my tax money) and maybe it will show the mayor he cannot do anything he wants.

I was lucky enough to land at Meigs twice before it got closed. Both times we went just to say that we did it. Who knows how many others went for that same reason. I hope everyone reading this thread had the chance to land there and my condolences to those who did not get to land there. It was neat.

Probably most have flying Microsoft Flight Simulator that is.

As far as reopening, let it go. Lazarus it isn't. BTW, it's now back to its original name of Northerly Island.
