That was obviously not scheduled, but I doubt if you'd find a shorter revenue flight on a 744. Today, I'd look in Japan.  Big grin

My guess would be UA either from IAD-ORD or DEN-ORD. I know LAX-SFO is on a 744 once in a while...never scheduled though.

Air India had this idiotic flight scheduled with a 747: BOM-CCJ-COK-Middle East and another 742/744: BOM-COK-TRV-Middle East. CCJ-COK and COK-TRV are both under 25 mins flying time!

Air New Zealand also operates a 747-400 flight on a 460-mile (roughly) flight. It only goes out once a week, but they do operate a 744 from CHC-AKL (I believe it is Saturday's only). It's the 2nd half of LAX-CHC-AKL (744 all the way).

QF operates MEL-SYD and SYD-MEL daily with 744s. These flights are principally to transfer planes which operate MEL-LHR and LHR-MEL services back to SYD for maintenance but you can buy domestic tickets on these sectors.

In regards to the SFO-OAK UA 747 flights - those were typically done on Saturday mornings, and one could by tickets for them. Obviously, with the shutdown of the OAK mtnc facility, it's a bit of a moot point now.

ANA / JAL both use 747-400 on many domestic routes such as Sapporo - Haneda and is about 75 mins using 747 or 777 - I did this route a few weeks ago and the frequency between these 2 cities is remarkable - may 20 or so flights / day

Due to shortage of planes, Iran Air rotinely substitutes the 747 (100B, 200B, SP) on the THR-MHD-THR and THR-SYZ-THR routes. Each sector is about 1 hour.

CDG-LHR : 188nm/348km/216mi

Regularly flown by AF's B747 in the 80's, especially on week-ends... before the tunnel under the Channel was opened.

I doubt you'd find one shorter than OAK-SFO, which I flew in 1988 to qualify for the triple miles promotion on MileagePlus that year. I was credited with a whole 11 miles even though it took a circuitous route over San Francisco, then down to Monterey Bay for another u-turn to avoid traffic at SJC to line up for landing! TWA used to run 747s on Tuesdays and Wednesdays in the winter months from LHR-AMS (217 miles) as an extension of a JFK-LHR flight. You couldn't buy a local ticket on it, but I took it once as a connection from their BOS-LHR flight, and even though the flights docked next to each other at LHR, it took them two days to get my luggage to me in AMS.

In the 70s both Pan Am (flights 120/121) and TWA (flights 760/761) used to fly a 747 daily SFO-LAX-LHR-CDG(ORY?), and I once flew a Pan Am 747 SFO-LAX (330 miles) early in the morning that was continuing on to Guatemala City.

(And yes, Csavel, Northwest Orient did fly JFK-IAD with a 747 in the late 70s-early 80s!)

for precision, that BAH-DOH on BA was on 747-400 for the last 3 years, but is a 777-200 since today! 1/11/04.

I suppose 300 odd quid that route is cheap for the privilege of being able to say "I've flown First Class on BA!"... Even though all you get is a drink on this 25 minutes hop! Just about enough time to take a pic of you in your private First bed to show off! A good Xmas present!

I don't know if this helps but the shortest one I flew is

NRT or HND - ITM. This is 278 miles and flown on a 747-400 Domestic. Other than that, there is the daily NRT-ITM service which is flown on a int'l configured ac. Other than that, I heard that there is NRT-NGO service on the JAL 744 Int'l configuration. This should be around 200 miles or even less and 45 minutes flight time compared to 55 for ITM.

During the late 80s/early 90s, Lufthansa used to fly a 747 IAH-DFW-FRA, and the reverse. No local rights, thus you couldn't purchase a ticket between IAH and DFW. The last time I flew this (September, 1990) the flight from IAH to DFW had 12 passengers, on a 747-200. As I recall, the load DFW-FRA was less that 1/3 full also.

Hasn't UA used B747 DEN-SFO in the past?

It's not the shortest, but seems to be a very short hop for a 747.

In the mid 80's I flew on a TWA 747 from BOS to JFK. I thought that was strange even for an international Thru flight. There were very few people on the flight.

Yes, UA does/did occasionally fly 744s between Denver and SFO. They also flew them from DEN to LAX. I have been on the reverse, LAX-DEN, once.

I seem to remember meeting my cousin off BA flights in the early 90's from Islamabad that flew into LGW via MAN - I'm pretty sure those were 747's. I doubt if you could have bought a ticket for the MAN-LGW leg, but that would have been a pretty short flight...

For many years, Aer Lingus flew all of its transatlantic service from DUB via SNN using 747-100s. The distance is 122 miles and it usually took about 20 mins. It was one of the major reasons their North American flights lost so much money. Now they do mostly nonstops from DUB and SNN with A330-200/-300s.

Sabena (SN) flew Brazzaville-Kinshasa. Maybe 3 miles... (just the river Congo between!).

In the past I think AF flew Buenos Aires-Montevideo with a B744 (not sure?).

Also AF in the past, from Reunion Island (RUN) to Mauritius (MRU) with B742.

I had forgotten this, but back in October, 1977, I flew (my first 747 flight) on a PanAm 747SP from BOS-DTW. Not sure of the distance, but fairly short. It was an extension of a flight from LHR. I was switched from a TWA flight into STL that was cancelled. Flew PanAm to DTW then Braniff to MCI. As I recall, there were about 30 passengers on the flight. Those were the glory days!

Feb 1st 2001, UA 409...

This was a 747-400 on the DEN-SFO route, I was on it in Business, so my ticket says.

Also.. Jul 8th 2001 LAX - SFO, I have a 747-400, This has to be one of the shortest 747 routes in the US, though it was an equipment change to the advertised flight.
So far in 2008 45 flights and Gold already. JFK, IAD, LGA, SIN, HKG, NRT, AKL, PPT, LAX still to book ! Home Airport LCY

Syrianair 747-SPs have been spotted at Larnaca (LCA) recently, on their way from either Aleppo or Damascus.

That's gotta be pretty short! Less than an hour anyway.

Don't forget that Kuala Lumpur and Singapore share a shuttle service which is mainly served by the A330 and 777 from both national carriers. During the peak holiday seasons (and boy - are there quite a few in M'sia and S'pore with the multicultural ethnicities!) - the aircraft are often swapped for 744s on this short but frequent run.

At the same time, Japan Airlines and other carriers also operate this route although it is rare for them to operate the 747 on this sector today.

Oh - and Cathay Pacific used to fly the 747 on their daily Penang-KL sector too but is now mainly flown by the 773.

Shortest current 747 flights would have to be either Singapore-Malaysia, intra-Japan or AI's BOM-AMD, which is about 400 km.

The shortest has to be DUB-SNN (its only about 118 miles). Not only was it government regulation for all US flights from DUB to stop at SNN but revenue pax could also buy tickets from DUB to SNN. The old Aer Lingus 747-100's used to operate the route.

In the early 90's, HP operated 747-200's on PHX-LAS flights as part of their HNL service. Actual flight time is only abot 30 minutes between the two.
