Pilot Broadcasts Hijacking Signal By Mistake

Mon Nov 01, 2004 11:00 pm

A few days ago, a commercial flight bound to Buenos Aires emitting the hijacking signal (7700 ?) caused panic, and Argentina Air Force jets were ready to scramble. Once the pilot regained communications, he explained it was a mistake, he wanted to emit the no radios signal (7777 ?), but mistook it.

Sorry I don't remember the flight number and operator.

Of course, the plane was escorted till the end of the runway, where all the formal procedures took place.

HOW CAN THIS HAPPEN? Must he be sanctioned?

hey there jet blast. The hijack signal is alpha code 7500. 7700 is for emergency. I was told in college to always squawk down from 7 and not up as 7777 is a military code used on some training missions and unmanned shoot downs...can anyone confirm this?

it's quite a story, who knows what was going on in the cockpit? Good thing no one was shot down...you never know!

take care

The transponder code for hijacked aircraft should be 7600, while 7700 is the one for aircraft in trouble. If you don't want to transmit anything, then it should be 1200.

May someone see if this is correct?

I heard about a little rhyme student pilots are taught to remember that 7500 thingy: "Seventy five - man with a knife."

Seventy Five- Taken A Nose Dive
Seventy Six- Radio Needs A Fix
Seventy Seven- Need Some Help From Heaven........

Just made them up but then again if you need a rhyme to remember proper transponder codes than you might be, as they say, SOL..

Glad all is good and everyone is ok.

Thanks again.
