NWA 747-200 At ORD Yesterday

Tue Nov 02, 2004 1:24 am

Hey there NW folks,

I was just wondering if anyone knows why there was a passenger 747-200 parked over at the Delta hangar last night in ORD. The usual cargo 747 was parked inside, and the 747-200 was outside on the ramp. It was quite cool to see, we don't see too many classic 747s in Chicago. It looked nice and shiny in the new NW colors.

Thanks for any help!

It was there to receive an unscheduled engine change. Ship 6638 needed an engine change and was ferried in from LAX. The aircraft was to operate LAX-NRT but instead a A332 was ferried in at the last minute as a substitution.

ORDZW,

You got me thinking now. Do you guys have anyone other than cargo operators that operate a classic 747 in there? KLM with the 743 was the last that I could remember, but that is now a 744, right? As for cargo, I know that NW uses them and I saw a Kalita last week.

Iowa744fan:

No passenger airlines currently fly scheduled flights to ORD using a classic 747.

PSU.DTW.SCE - Thanks for the quick reply!

I was trying to think if anyone flew a classic in on a regular basis, but FriendlySkies is correct, there are no scheduled passenger flights that use a 742. The only time I have seen one is on an equipment change. The most recent example was when Iberia sent one in instead of its regular A340. That is really the only time we get to see 742 passenger service anymore.

As of 15:30 local, the aircraft was still at Delta's hangar. I believe #2 engine was the one that was changed, as all the cowlings are off of it. The APU was running all day as well, at least from 0700 this morning. There is also an engine on a dolly next to the hangar. If you go up into UA hangar 5, you can get a much better look at what's going on from the second floor.

Is this an agreement with DL maint? Why was it ferried from LAX to ORD and not MSP? Who will performing the change? Is this an outsourced procedure?

Another try but does anyone know why NW sent this plane to ORD for engine change or was that info incorrect?

Just an update, the aircraft was gone for a time this morning (Wednesday). It has sinced returned back to the same spot. Perhaps they performed a high power run on it?

I'm just guessing...but the engine change was probably done at ORD because they had the manpower and an engine. I did a double take myself when I saw it there...very rare to see a NW psgr HOG at ORD

NWA does weekly maintenance and scheduled engine changes on our 747F fleet in ORD.

6638 required a second engine change due to a inflight overspeed it experienced departing LAX last week. MSP has no sched 747-200 traffic, so it made since to send it to ORD to have the engine changed.

In ORD, NWA also completes 'A' checks on DC-9's (1-2 per night) and A319/320's(1 per night) and blade lubes.

Our ORD station does excellent work!!

UAL Bagsmasher -

I actually saw it taxi by the Pacific parking lot today around 2pm back to the DL hangar. It was quite a sight to see - I don't know if it is just the silver paint job, but it looked quite impressive! It is now in the exact same spot as the last time I saw it.
