Eagle Non Stop CID-DFW

Tue Nov 02, 2004 4:00 am

A friend of mine is coming to visit me in DFW in the middle of December, and he lives in Iowa City, Iowa (about 20 mins from CID) and i was looking at flights and times and prices for him. The one way non stops on American Eagle are all around $541, no matter what day of the week or time you choose. Obviously they have the monopoly in this market, and i was just curious at how good their load factors are on this flight (CID-DFW and vice versa). I can't imagine there being that many people in Eastern Iowa who need to go nonstop to DFW and are willing to pay $541 each way. Incidentally, the cheapest flight in the area i could find is a $122 on AirTran out of Moline and obviously change planes in Atlanta. Thanks in advance

Most of that is connecting traffic and so the prices are actually less if you connect to some cities such as LAS. The CID/Iowa City area is fairly good in size, they also have a fairly large catchment area. The one way flight you looked up was probibly more expensive then round trip. Also, what dates did you use? Are the dates flexible?

the dates aren't really flexible. My last day here at Southwest is gonna be close to the 16th of December, and he is coming down here to drive back on up to Iowa with me around the 20th. I moved dates around for the whole week and the one way non-stop was always $541.

I live in Des Moines, and Eagle also has non-stops from DSM to DFW daily. Granted, it's about 100 miles from Iowa City, but your friend might want to check the fares from here. If it's a lot cheaper, it might be worth the drive.

P.S. My scanner just told me Air Force One was cleared to land here in DSM. You'd think there's an election coming up . . .  Yawn

The cheapest I could find out of CID for those dates is UA to ORD then ORD-TUL and then AA TUL-DFW with the price at $312.80.

Unfortunately, the legacy carriers gouge people with their outrageous one-way fares. Fortunately, more people-friendly airlines like WN and FL one way fares are simply half of the round trip fare. It appears Air-tran is your only real option, unless you want to take a bus.

Why not buy a round-trip and only use one-way? I found a R/T airfare from CID-DFW on American for $334 including taxes, departing Dec. 16 returning Dec. 21.

I work for an airline and realize this is a boo-boo, but if it will save you money and they can't really hunt you down for it, why not? It could be your way of getting back at the legacies for charging so much for one-ways.
