Yep, AWA acquired a total of 4, 747-200's in 1989 when they began nonstop service between PHX
. I believe they chose the 747 because this was before ETOPS was granted between the mainland and Hawaii and you couldn't fly a twin engine jet that far over water. Also, HP
had their sights set on the pacific rim as well. In early 1991 during the gulf war, they started one stop service from PHX
to Nagoya, Japan via HNL
. The service to Japan didn't even last a year and they ended up selling the route.
The 747's to Japan and HNL
represented the excesses of the Ed Beuvais run America West. Bancrupcy followed and the 747's were gone by 1992.
