Yep, AWA acquired a total of 4, 747-200's in 1989 when they began nonstop service between PHX/LAS and HNL. I believe they chose the 747 because this was before ETOPS was granted between the mainland and Hawaii and you couldn't fly a twin engine jet that far over water. Also, HP had their sights set on the pacific rim as well. In early 1991 during the gulf war, they started one stop service from PHX/LAS to Nagoya, Japan via HNL. The service to Japan didn't even last a year and they ended up selling the route.

The 747's to Japan and HNL represented the excesses of the Ed Beuvais run America West. Bancrupcy followed and the 747's were gone by 1992.

i know that two were broken up in kingman, there is still one nose section left up there in old hp colors

Awesome..?? No, it nearly put them out of business. The costs to run these routes where the main driving force in AWA demise in the early 90's

HP 742s also operated nonstop to JFK both from LAS and PHX. I loved those birds on that HP logo!!! I hope to see an HP 744 operating LAS/PHX to NRT, LGW, JFK in the future!!!

Not true. 757/767 was operating ETOPS by 1989. The acquisition of 4 742's was simply sue to erroneous market analysis. AWA also ordered 2 744's.

I dumped at the gybe mark in strong winds when I looked up at a Porter Q400 on finals. Can't stop spotting.

I just have to wonder what would have happened if they had purchased 762ERs instead of the 742s. The 762ER was available at the time and had the range and ETOPS certification to run to HNL and Nagoya. It had commonality with the 757s too. If they had gone this way, would it have been such a failure? I think they wouldn't have been hurt as much, especially because I've heard that the load factors on the 742s were ridiculously low. If they went for 76s would they be in Europe now? We will never know, but it is fun to speculate.

No. It was the lack of passengers. HP's load factor on those flights was very bad.
The 747: The hands who designed it were guided by god.

I once flew on one all the way from PHX to LAS. I recall it being a packed house. On the return, I looked forward to another America West 747, but instead it was a Dash 8!

up in kingman, at the america west express ticket counter, the comment cards they still have there are from those old days. it still has a picture of a hp 747 on it in the old colors. when i was driving through on the way to laughlin we stopped at the airport to take pictures of all the stored a/c, and we grabbed a couple, that was the end of aug.
