UAL Seat Assignment - How To?

Thu Nov 04, 2004 12:45 am

United Airlines claims that is only assigns seats on check-in, however I am traveling to IAD from LHR (on UA919) at the beginning of December and would like to guarantee a seat on the upper deck of their 744, any suggestions ?

Cheers

Try using http://www.seatmaps.net . They offer a reservation service and are usually able to do these kinds of things.

UA gives seat assignments when you make a reservation. You can call them anytime and get an assigned seat. The only time you cannot is when it is getting close to departure or the seats are filling up, then it will be check in only for seats. I have never had a problem obtaining a seat beforehand.

Thats always worked for me...a few times I've booked UAL tickets online and the website said they were unable to assign seats at that time. Called up to speak to an actual agent and got it right away. If you have any trouble ask to speak to a supervisor. The only reason that it is sometimes not possible to get assigned a seat would be if the flight was very full/overbooked, then they hold the remaining seats for airport assigment. In that case be sure to get to the airport extremely early and you should be fine.

http://www.seatguru.com/ is always a help for me. I call in and tell them what seats what I want and they seem to never have any issues with it. It's airlines such as LH that are VERY strict on their seat assignment rules, or so I have experienced. Long hauls maybe but on the shorter flights they barely give me the time of day.

Good luck!

Max, that looks like a possible PNR code. Not sure if it is a fluke but all my UA PNRs have been just letters.

I'd recommend not posting your PNR on the internet for obvious reasons!

You can also pick your seats by logging onto their web site - ual.com, just pull up your reservation and pick your seats, alternatively if you are flying before then, just stop by a self-service UAL machine and you can pick the seats on that machine - works great!

If you cannot get it ahead of time, IAD has loads of EasyCheckIn machines at the main terminal. Unless the flight is full, you can chose to change your seat, and they will provide a seatmap on the screen, and you just click the open seat you want.
Or, after it looks like most people have boarded, and they are going to close the door soon, walk upstairs and check for any open seats/rows. I've found that most UA flight attendents don't care if you swap seats, as long as they're unoccupied and in the same class.  Smile  Big grin
