IL-76 Aircraft Loading

Thu Nov 04, 2004 6:03 am

I work for a ground handling company in YEG and we will be servicing an IL-76 aircraft on November 10. If anyone has information regarding the operation of this aircraft (gpu plug, lavatory and water service panel, cargo door operaton, cargo loading, towbar etc.). Any information at all would be greatly appreciated.

IL76 will carry a crew of technicians who will take care of all the above
cargo loading is thru rear ramp usually by internal crane - operated by loadmster
GPU plugs in near the door at left side of a/c near main wheels
lav svce point near the nose on right of a/c
water is in canisters o/board
they will have a towbar onboard

As Antonovman said they will have a loadmasters/engineers on board who you van expect them too be very helpful, language difficulties may present themselves but they are usuall helpful and approachable.

If you have big cargo you can usually just reverse a flat bed truck up to the lowered cargo door where the engineers can winch or crane onto the aircrafts inbuilt roller system (rollers can be inverted easily to give you a flat floor).

Dont expect the fuelling to be done in a hurry, especially if they are going on a long trip as the flow rate is naormally pretty low, from memory (maybe wrong I believe you can connect two fuel hydrants to the aircraft fuelling point (underneath the right wing on the forward part of the main landing gear fairing) to speed things up.

I've taken part in some Il 76 and An-124 loadings here in Turkey. It's good fun, with any luck one of the Crew will speak good english and will tell you jokes from the communist era! If what you are loading has measurements, it doesnt matter if you give them the dimensions sometimes, the load master gets out his tape measure and remeasures every piece of cargo, this goes more for the An-124, obviously he can't make mistakes. Make sure you get a cockpit visit on the 76!! It's awesome, and kinda mind boggling at the same. And excellent advice to wear the ear plugs. If the engines are really old like the ones here in Turkey, you will see them carry their own BP oil quarts and the technician will open the engine case and start filling her up!!

have a good time Dan!

The only time there is too much fuel onboard, is when you're on fire!
