How Do Airline Pilots Cure Boredom?

Thu Nov 04, 2004 2:10 pm

Hi,

I was just wondering, what do you guys do to stop yourselves from getting bored during flight? I know that most of you will love your job and all that, but it must get boring at times during those medium/long haul flights!
Are you allowed to listen to music, read magazine's and books etc? Or do you have to be monitoring/piloting the aircraft every second?

Thanks!

Didn't the pilots of the United flight that crashed in Colorado Springs or Denver on takeoff during a snowstorm (late 1980s or early 1990s) spend their 'bored' time before the flight talking about sexual acts with one of the stewardess'?

When I was a F/A, our pilots read newspapers, magazine, books etc as we were only domestic and regional flights.

I dunno what they do long haul though!

Go to http://www.airdisaster.com and there is transmissions of a DL flight at DFW were they are taking about lude stuff and then they crash and die on take off. Not sure which flight or how long ago.

If it was a long haul, some a/c have rest areas for crew to lay down. My CFI flys for AA and goes ORD-FRA, GLA, FCO, and ORD-HNL. He uses his Apple Ipod and paper back novels to pass time. They also have an F class seat on flights so I'm sure they could use the PTV.

To pass time I would assume they do alot of reading.

If you are flying with someone interesting, you can talk about stuff for hours. Some people bore you to death immediately. Time to pull out the newspaper. Some jerks won't let you read in the cockpit. I never really minded if the FO did it. At least he didn't fall asleep!

On long haul, the FA's will get bored and come up and talk.TC

Lets see, reading (which I love), Flirting with the FAs (which I love), bullshitting (which I love) and flying the damn airplane. Why oh WHY couldn't it be a better time to become an airline pilot!!!!

IIRC, it was just after Canadian Regional became part of Jazz that the rule came down, no non-essential reading material in the cockpit. For example, newspapers, magazines, paperbacks, etc were not allowed. Not many crews seemed to worry about it, but that was company policy.

I guess we never know what they talk about when flights go well.

I don't think its that we won't know...I think its probibly better if we didn't know.
Pilots are idots, who at any given moment will attempt to kill themselves or others.

On the 744 (Air India’s at least) the pilot response warning goes of if the controls are not touched for 20 mins. Someone correct me if im wrong on the 20 mins thing……. So.... in the meantime I guess they read newspapers, go over airport diagrams, and take pictures of other aircrafts if they are lucky enough to fly close enough hehehehe.... but they still do lots of work  Smile

I'm far from an airline pilot, but on long, slow, cross-country flights in one of the Cessnas, I surf AM radio stations on the ADF. There used to be a hip-hop station up in GRR that played ghetto jams all day long. They'd play Beastie Boys, Run DMC, Eminem, etc.

Nothing like bumpin' to Snoop with the autopilot on...

P.S. - Unfortunately, that station went out of business. Now it's f***ing "Radio Disney".
