Strange Big Buldge On Top Of 737

Fri Nov 05, 2004 7:56 am

What is the strange protrusion shown on this 737? Looks similar to that on the nose of Air Force One.

At first look, I was going to tell you that the second pic was a 747 and the bump is normal!! On further inspection, I could only think that this bump would be for sending or recieving signals. Is this only on westjet? Do they maybe have inflight internet or satellite tv?

Probably the Live TV antenna...the F9 and B6 Airbus fleets have similar bulges as well...

Yes, it is the LiveTV antenna assembly. That's why it took WS so long to get FAA approval for LiveTV; it was the exterior, not interior issues (I'm told). It was the first LiveTV installation on a 73G.

I'll bet it adds a decent amount of parasite drag, even though it's pretty rounded...it ruins the nice smooth top spine of these aircraft!

Oh yeah, and what's on the nose of AF1 is an IFR (In Flight Refueling) receptacle...so the Air Farce tanker can lower a boom in there and pass gas to the 747 so it can have longer endurance.
