AZ MD11 Back Online

Sun Nov 07, 2004 3:01 pm

While trying to sort out some misconnecting passengers here on their way from New Zealand to Europe through Indonesia, my CRS pulled up these flights for today:

MXP DEL 07/1110 07/2310 AZ772 J2 D2 I2 Y0 B0 M0 H0 KC VC TC NC LC WC [M1M]
DEL MXP 08/0250 08/0730 AZ773 J7 D7 I7 Y7 B7 M7 H7 K7 V7 T7 N7 L7 WC [M1M]

It seems that AZ is again deploying its MD11s, and the MXP-DEL route is at least one of the routes again served by this aircraft. The flights is also showing the MD11 for the next days.

Now, it has been discussed here that AZ was contemplating bringing back these aircraft from storage, yet that information has, to my knowledge, never been confirmed here on this forum. In another thread, which is discussing airlines still operating MD11s, some member stated that AZ was bringing back the MD11 to reopen the MXP-LAX route. Apparently the reintroduction of the aircraft has already happened.

Anyone here has more information regarding the number of aircraft that are back online and what routes they are currently plying? As far as I remember, AZ operated 8 MD11s (3 full pax and 5 combi's) and the M1M code, which is used above for the DEL flight, points at one of the combi aircraft. I believe the 3 full-pax frames have already been sold to LH Cargo.

I would guess AZ is using the MD-11s to replace a 777 on a route so they can fly the 777 to LAX

When I passed through MXP last week there was only a single M11 (couldn't spot the registration through the fog) parked on the AZ ramp being serviced. AFAIK, it will see service exclusively to DEL this winter. AZ has always had a strong cargo presence in India and the M1M will allow it to both take advantage of the Indian open skies (pushing both MXP-DEL and MXP-BOM to daily service) and increase its cargo presence on the route.

MXP LAX 15/1000 15/1330 AZ620 JC DC IC YC BC MC HC KC VC TC NC LC WC [772]
LAX MXP 15/1530 16/1200 AZ621 JC DC IC YC BC MC HC KC VC TC NC LC WC [772]

A second MD11 Combi will apparently join the active fleet with the beginning of the 2005 Summer Operations. This aircraft will operate 6 weekly MXP-BOM flights:

MXP BOM 15/1020 15/2215 AZ770 J7 D7 I7 Y7 B7 M7 H7 K7 V7 T7 N7 L7 W4 [M1M]
BOM MXP 16/0135 16/0715 AZ771 J7 D7 I7 Y7 B7 M7 H7 K7 V7 T7 N7 L7 W4 [M1M]

MXP-DEL is also for the next summer scheduled to remain operated by MD11, 6 times weekly only.

from what i've heard the M11M's are only online while 763's receive new interior configurations, but who knows with ALitalia.

I don't think that refurbishment of the B763 interiors would take a year, would it? AZ is apparently increasing the MD11 operation in the next summer schedule, so there's probably something more substantial behind this move. Waiting for more 777s to arrive maybe?

The AZ flight to LAX has "disappeared" from the schedules....saw it myself yesterday at work in Apollo and just before I left last night, it wasn't there. It's not in Amadeus either currently. Hopefully they will start 777s to LAX next summer...

If it counts, I can confirm that the 3 full pax versions has indeed been sold to LH Cargo...

Yes, registration is I-DAPU, Sunday I was in MXP and saw this bird parked closely to the new "cargo-city". Re-opening LAX is under discussion, I believe that this could be a great chance for AZ to return operating in the West Coast. Once we also had flights to San Francisco, operated by B763.

B747-437B, I agree, Alitalia has a very strong cargo traffic from India, MAA, DAC, BOM and HYD comes into my mind but there are many others. Using a MD-11 Combi on MXP-BOM and MXP-DEL should be very profitable.

Officially there are no more B777 on order...
