Ryanair To Malta?

Tue Nov 09, 2004 3:22 am

The question is: will Ryanair (FR) ever start operations to Malta (MLA) now that MLA is an EU member? There is only one airport in MLA and this will make it FR's (probably) only major international airport outside the British Isles and Ireland (and PMO). Where will FR fly from to serve MLA? Stansted? Very unlikely - flight too long to keep the fares dirt cheap. Ciampino? Maybe. But who will pay the landing fees for FR?

There are rumours that a major LCC will start ops to MLA soon, or perhaps by next Summer. My guess is Easyjet from Germany, which is a strong market for MLA - only second to the UK. But Ryanair seems to pop up more often in the aviation circles.

I doubt it, because Malta is pretty big for the average UK holidaymaker and with the amount of airlines that visit Malta:

Air Malta (Obvious)
Arabian Airlines
British Airways

Air Malta already operates flights throughout the UK, including Stansted, so i doubt Ryanair would make a lot of profit.

I know that GB Airways used to fly to Malta for BA.

Is BA now operating the flight themselves?.

Also flying to Malta were Alitalia and Excel Airways.

Perhaps by Palermo? To increase traffic on the Palermo-London leg they could
make a connecting flight?

GB Airways still fly to Malta for BA from LGW, and as from May next year, GB Airways will start flying into MLA from MAN.

AZ have daily flights to/from FCO and MXP, codesharing with AF.

Excel Airways are still flying into Malta.

There's already my favourite LCC flying into Malta: it's SAS snowflake from Copenhagen, Stockholm, Oslo, Gotenburg and Malmo, with a mix of 736s, 73Gs, 738s and MD80s.

I'd be cool if FR did!

About the flight length from London to Malta - the block time is only about 3 hours 45 mins which is less than STN-PMO (4 hours), STN-RIX (4 hours 35 mins), STN-TMP (4 hrs 50 mins) and so on. (Note: all the times include the relevant time difference.) So I don't think the times will be the problem. Are airfares to MLA from various European cities, like Milan, Rome, Paris, Frankfurt, London, Brussels, etc., normally cheap, reasonable or expensive?

Your conclusions are wrong on the block times - you can't include time differences! (Look at the return flight times... Big grin)

STN-PMO... actual flight time around 3:00
STN-RIX... actual flight time around 2:35
STN-TMP... actual flight time around 2:50

Actual block time on a flight to MLA from London is around 3:05.

Back to the original question though... will FR ever start ops to MLA.

Only MO'L would know the answer to that - I'm sure he wouldn't rule it out....
