New Air SErvice To SLC & PDX

Tue Nov 09, 2004 9:54 am

In the early spring, there is supposed to be an existing airline starting new service in SLC & PDX Supposedly their route is gonna be DFW-SLC-PDX. The un-named carrier is in negotiations for gate space at SLC. Anyone care to wager who this will be?

If its from DFW, I'd assume AirTran?

Airtran will not want to go DFW-SLC-PDX.

Hmmm... well if it wasnt AirTran... I assume both Delta and American are established on SLC and PDX flights...so mabye Alaska would be offering a connecting service?

I would have guessed Alaska.

They have no presence at SLC - which would explain the negotiations for gate space - but I would have thought they would start SEA/SLC first.

I suppose there is a chance it is Frontier, but don't they already have gate space there?

cheers

I don't think it is AS....
I can see AS trying SEA-DFW.... but with their new partnership with DL I can't see them trying to compete DFW-SLC or SLC-SEA/PDX.... one would think DL would not see the humor in that....

Anyone hear about AS turning DL in SEA...???? That is a current rumbling...
Perhaps DL will be scaling back SEA and use AS code share...???

Speculation is that it is AirTran, but with the news about them placing so much emphasis on MDW that "could" be discounted.
Alaska may see this as a way to get both SLC and DFW operations underway since DL is abandoning DFW. Guess we will see

So if I understand this right, this unnamed carrier is going to fly DFW to PDX with a stop in SLC (odd route, but let's go with it for now), and they only need gate space in SLC, not DFW or PDX. I just wanted to get the rumor straight before I made a guess.

It seems odd for AirTran.

If the deal with ATA is done, AirTran will wet lease ATA aircraft to fly ATA's routes. But ATA flies to SEA, not PDX, so you'd think Airtran would want to connect DFW to SEA.

If the AirTran deal with ATA is not done, then all bets are off, of course.

cheers

DFW-SLC... OK, fine. DL goes down to, what, 3x/day on that route? Maybe there's room there, although AA is slated to fly it 5x.

SLC-PDX... Huh? DL's slated to do 7x/day, 3 RJ and 4 mainline. I can't imagine that there's a need for any more capacity, and if there was, DL's new best friend AS would start up PDX and SEA to SLC to connect the network dots. WN also goes 2x/day.

DFW-PDX... 4x nonstop on AA. Reasonable connections: AA/AS-3, DL-3, F9-3, UA-2, CO-2. That's 4 nonstops and 13 other one-change reasonable itineraries to get between the two. Gotta look at the connections since the service talked about here is via SLC. (Reasonable means not going PDX-EWR-DFW or PDX-ATL-DFW or PDX-IAH-SLC-DFW, as some of the airline websites suggested.)

I can't see where there's service begging to be started here. If someone wants a piece of the PDX pie, IMHO, they're going to have to go east of Denver, nonstop, to be most successful.

(And I gotta crow about this being my 2000th post!  Smile/happy/getting dizzy )

Fightingdingo. In SLC there is a radio station called KSL talk radio. They were talking yesterday with the Director of Airports who was talking & telling about all the new contruction at SLC International, and he mentioned this during his talk.
Incidently, he also talked about the makeover at Delta Terminal #2 that is going to be happening.
