Jeddah King Abdulaziz Int'l Expansion

Wed Nov 10, 2004 2:56 am

If you thought Doha and Dubai were the only airports in the Middle East getting fancy high-tech terminals, think again!

It's about time that Jeddah gets facilities on the same league as Dammam King Fahd Int'l and Riyadh King Khalid Int'l.

Jeddah is the busiest airport in Saudi Arabia, yet it has the crummiest airport.

Those of you who have seen pictures of Riyadh King Khalid Int'l and Dammam King Fahd Int'l know that they are absolutely amazing.

I'm not sure when they will begin work on this expansion, I think in 2006.

It's good to see that the primary gateway to the two holy mosques will finally have a nice terminal.

Cairo Int'l will soon begin construction on its Terminal 3. It will be interesting to see what it will look like.

Beirut Int'l which completed its expansion and modernization project in 2002 may see another expansion in the coming few years to add more widebody gates.

Anyone have anymore info?

Nice! I flew through JED several times about 10 years ago and although archetectually striking in its current form it's way too cramped, and the planeside buses were a real pain! The new design is a big improvement.

Anywone know if the Hajj terminal remain where it is or will the new termial have the capacity to replace it?

PS: I also flew through RUH once. Has to be the most beautiful airport terminal I ever visited!

It looks like SV and other carriers are going to use the same terminal if the new one opens. JED is not a nice terminal at all but there are more shops than RUH.

RUH is fine but from the architectal point nothing compared to HKG, ICN and KUL.

Looks awesome! Middle Eastern airports have a history of repsonding to need with investment, and this looks to be no exception. I like that the existing terminal is integrated into the new plan, serving as the central building. Very impressive indeed.

I'm assuming the layout will follow the precedent set by King Khalid International in Riyadh... one wing of the terminal for Saudia and the other for everyone else. Will the Haj terminal continue to function in its once-a-year role?

Looks the Middle East is the new "Asia" of airport construction - between Dubai, Doha, Cairo, Tehran (if they ever open it), Bahrain and the recently rebuilt Beirut and Tel Aviv, there's lots of construction going on.

From the looks of the renderings, the hajj terminal will remain. It can be seen in the distance in the overview renderings.

As Swissgabe mentioned, it looks like they will be focusing on one terminal for all airlines. I am guessing the other old terminal will become for VIP use only.

Jsnww81,

Damascus Int'l in Syria will soon see expansion and upgrades as well among other Syrian airports.

I was about to say the same thing. Maybe after the expansion, JED will become NW's 3rd foreign hub after NRT & AMS Big grin

...a new airport is being built in Tunisia at about 80 Km from downtown Tunis. The airport will have a capacity of 30 million passengers by the year 2020. The airport will open in 2007.

I hope this means they will get rid of the North Terminal (for foreign airlines) which is always a pain to get to and get out of.

It will also be interesting to see the reality compared to this dreamy fiction.

Thanks for posting the photos BA!

Cheers all.
and with that..cabin crew, seats for landing please.

I am pleased.

Now all we need is a high speed train from the front door of the airport to the front door of the mosque in Makkah  Smile/happy/getting dizzy
