Okay, two questions:

1. Where can I get it?

2. Does it come in a compact size, say in eyeglasses/sunglasses versions?

Yes it would be great!!! =) But seriously, I don't think I would want to get scan like that...It's a privacy issue.

Absolutely unnecessary. For the next twenty years or so, passengers will not allow a highjacking.

doesn't anyone know here that you can do this with a video camera and filters.. and its not as impressive as it sounds.. its a very grainy image.. n ur not really gonna see much unless someones wearing very thing clothing... The camera that can do this was a sony handcam.. dnt remember the exact model.. it was recalled rather quickly for just this reason... it doesn't really look like the people don't have clothes on.. its more like they are wearing a clear material slightly tinted... this also happened with a japanese phone camera design... its not really done on purpose its just when the night filters line up just right..

Somehow the machine they talk about here sounds a bit more sophisticated than that. I mean after all it was not an accident, it was intended to do this.

This is a type of x-ray machine not a video camera. TSA demonstrated the technology in the US about a year ago to a large uproar. Here is one article about their demo:

Here is the x-ray picture of a TSA researcher who demonstrated the machine.

Oh and just to show its not just thin or wet clothing, here is a picture of what she was wearing when she walked through the machine.

Thanks for the pics FATFlyer...it's a bit scary how good the resolution is. I stand by my post...is a little too much. It reminds me a bit of that Arnold movie "Total Recall".

Your welcome.

CNN international has a different picture with their article, it shows the x-ray of a male with several guns hidden under his clothes.

As I said in the other thread, big whoop! They can take all the pics of me they want. And besides, they only see a contour. No texture or color.

Hiya,
I can't understand what people are frightened of. The scan only shows some vague body contours, as does the manual "pat down". Surely this device is preferable to any previous method of detecting weapons?
As I have a manual "pat down" every time I go through security, I'd be perfectly happy to submit to a "low-level x-ray". The security people already know how fat/thin I look by my clothing, so they certainly don't need to confirm it by X-ray!!

If this does roll out to other airports I foresee a burgeoning market in lead lined underwear. Any venture capitalists out there??  Laugh out loud

Hopefully, they can come up with another name for this machine!
This certainly is a grey area (no pun intended). I'm all for improved measures to ensure public safety... But, those images are quite revealing.... Then again, now-a-days, everybody is checking each other out and passing judgment on their physical attributes, anyway... Especially with all the revealing clothing a lot of females wear these days. So, I guess it's not such a big deal after all (again, no pun intended).

Definitely not a new story but when you consider the average body that us Americans are working on now the unappealing aspects of working TSA get relationally worse.

Yuch.

AW and Superfly are right...this is a grey area...there's gotta be some insurance that this technology is carefully used, and that it can be improved to avoid a violation to ones privacy.

It never ceases to amaze me that people (especially) Americans are willing to subject themselves to in the name of "security". Prior to 9/11 I bet the Yanks would be screaming about all the things that are happening now..naked xrays, no fly lists, intimate pat downs...what a scared nation!
There are articles after articles of screeners in the US that steal from luggage, conduct rude patdowns, bad behaviour and meanwhile miss a lot of potentially dangerous materials that are passed thru! such as guns and knives?!?!?

If this happens I guarantee its a matter of time before we see the website www.hiddennudeairportxrays.com!

cheers

Just wait until someone develops the technology to record these images, catches somebody a little bit famous, and releases the images on the net...

Perhaps a radical change in our Middle East policy could put a stop to all of this paranoia.
But that would be logical.
