According to Southwest's website they plan on taking only 29 737s next year. I doubt Boeing has 21 new 737 delivery slots less than one year away.
But then again there are chances of obtaining ATA's 738s or second-hand 733s. Second-hand 737-700s are very hard to find.

I think the website refers to 29 net aircraft.

Actually, they plan to take 34 deliveries next year -- it's just that they're retiring the last 5 -200's so the net is only 29 aircraft added to the fleet. Boeing probably doesn't have 31 delivery slots available next year, but it's likely that Southwest could accelerate a few 2006 orders/options into late 2005.

There are, of course, quite a few 737-300's parked or flying with financially weak carriers. Southwest has said many times in the past that they would prefer factory-fresh -700's from Boeing for expansion, but they have also expressed that they were open to other options if a "market opportunity" were to present itself.

With growth at MDW and PHL, along with new gates at BWI opening and the possibility of new cities in 2005, they will have plenty of places to fly the planes.

Problem is... the 733 does not have a standardized cockpit, they're from the dark days when airlines configured their aircraft individually. For example, DL's 733-G (G denoting glass cockpit) are not compatible with WN's 733. Hence WN's preference for factory-built aircraft.

But then again there are chances of obtaining ATA's 738s or second-hand 733s. Second-hand 737-700s are very hard to find.

Remember that WN has stated they do not like to grow beyone 12% annually. Growing any faster requires manpower to be added rapidly, upseting their internal organization and corperate culture. Adding 50-60 aircraft in one year is a very aggressive move and cannot be done without additional employees. Opperating aircraft of higher capacity, that require roughly the same number of crew, could be a way around this.

The availability of ATA's 737-800s might also be attractive... what's one more F/A when you can have the aircraft in months rather than years.

I have no idea whether SWA would go after used -300s or ATA's used -800s, but there are pros/cons to each.

Used -300s
More available than used NG variants, cheaper
Older, thus more MX work
Cockpit commonality issues
Need to install HUDs
Only 3 F/As required

ATA's used -800s
33 aircraft, more expensive to acquire
Oldest aircraft 3.5 years old, less MX
Easy cockpit commonality via software changes
Already have winglets, more fuel efficient.
Already have HUDs (a slightly newer model than SWA's)
Already have big engines, 27,000 lbs thrust each
Need 4th F/A

There's always the possibility that any acquisition of used aircraft (-300s, -800s, whatever) could be for a fixed 2-3 year term until Boeing can deliver new "standard -7H4" models new to SWA.

I think that WN will need to make changes to their own structure. The are standing by their statement of no a/c larger than a 737-700. The -800's are going to be able to get faster than the 700's. I think that making cuts in seats in the a/c will allow for them to keep it to 3 f/a's. But then again they are about getting as much as they can for their buck.

They can easily have an all NG fleet though some if not many of their non-NG a/c are quite young and seeing how the -200's are still going we won't see this for a while though non-NG's will be the minority. Why can't Boeing just step up production rates per-month?

If WN buys ATA's 738's with winglets......which WN routes have the heaviest loads and would benefit from added capacity, especially routes where frequencies can't be easily added? (I can think of 738's being good for transcons right off the bat, PHX-BWI and LAX-BWI come to mind).

Oh, yes, also how many seats could a 738 have in WN's current 33 inch seat pitch all economy configuration? I've seen posts in the past speculating about holding down a WN 738 to 149 seats to get around the additional F/A requirement. If THAT were the case there'd be lots of added room....good for the pax, but not so good for the bottom line.
