Future Of AA767-200s And JFK-LAX Runs

Wed Nov 10, 2004 8:20 am

Hi

As a frequent flyer between LAX and JFK on AA I've noticed they exclusively use the 767-200s. Seeing that AA doesn't exactly rotate the 762 system wide, that already have some grounded and that UAL is doing these reconfigured 757s on that route, what is the future for AA? Will they eventually phase out the 762 for 763s? Would they even consider shrinking the frequency in favor of 777s? Just curious...

Never. They have barely have enough 777s to fulfill their LHR/NRT/EZE/GRU schedules. The only possibility is AA trying to get a 777 on JFK-LAX as repositioning flight, as they are starting an MIA-JFK with a 777 this winter to reposition aircraft.

They have a few more 777's on order and they are looking at the possibility of scheduling a new flight LAX-NRT so yes maybe in 2006 or 2007 we'll see a 777 on a JFK-LAX run as a repositioning flight (like ORD-DFW). And, as the flagship of the fleet, it will definitely be flown in three-class service.

I say that sometime in late 2005 early 2006 that AA will run JFK-LAX depending on the economy and assuming that nothing happens. But what will happen to the other 767-200's?

Thanks in AAdvance!!

LAX-NRT is already a daily scheduled flight.

I would think American would ground the 762s and either go the upgraded 757 route a la United, or stick the 763s on the route.

DL used to operate a full schedule of BizElite configured 763s on the routes. I really miss those days.

I think AA will likely phase out the 767-200 on the transcon flights because the planes are among the earliest 767's delivered and they are getting WAY up there in airframe hours flown.

For the immediate future, I seee AA reconfiguring a number of 757-200's into roomier seating configuration for transcon flights, and further down the road AA will buy the Boeing 7E7-8 to replace the 767-200's.

I love AA but speaking of 752's, I wish all the 3 MIA-SFO routes were flown with 763's not just the AM flight with 763...the 752's on a 6 hour flight is quite uncomfortable. I am flying out tommorow on the 6pm to SFO.

Hey Mark, any chance of seeing upgrade in fleet with the 2 remaining flights out to SFO from MIA? being that UA pulled out.

From what I understand OPS are happy with the Boeing 762 as are PAX (and crew).

Should the aircraft be retired I could see OPS replacing the aircraft with B763’s. Maybe if the route continues to grow we may see Boeing 772's but the pax numbers at this time would not support that type on this sector.

As for the SFO MIA route, I am not sure about PAX numbers on this sector, but I don’t think we will see any permanent B763 operations anytime soon. I am afraid you are stuck with the B752's.

Even though those 767-200s are getting up in years they will be around for a long time. (can you say nw dc9?). Remember AA kept the DC-10 utill it was ready to fall apart. Those aircraft have served AA very well from starting new trans atlantic services and now transcons with true wide body comfort. I realy like that aircraft a lot particularly for the transcon markets.
