MDW Might Have Some New Carriers

Thu Nov 11, 2004 1:02 am

What are the odds of MDW getting some new carriers. Not like Air Tran taking over ATA's stuff, I meen will there be any new airlines that will come to serve the area?

Jetblue?
America West?
Allegiant?
Just to name a Few............. Any other thoughts?

I could possibly see DH jumping in. TZ has a lot of capacity on MDW-DCA now, and while FL may keep the route, I would imagine that they will shift a couple of the slots elsewhere, and they will definitely use smaller a/c, reducing capacity even if they keep the same number of flights.

There's nothing keeping any of those airlines out of MDW right now. MDW has available gate capacity (controlled by the city) for new entrants. ATA is nowhere near using all its gate capacity with roughly 75 daily mainline departures from 14 gates.

MDW doesn't fit Allegiant's current business model (which is a few weekly flights from tertiary airports to LAS) but who knows if they'd want to change that. Why they'd want to compete with WN's 9 daily flights to LAS is beyond me, but maybe the plan would be to offer flights from places like FNL or BIS to MDW (though it would be difficult to offer a reasonable schedule).

America West served MDW in the past and pulled out. Read whatever you want into that.

JetBlue has stated they would prefer to serve ORD.

Don't forget the additional ~70 flights/day C8 runs out of three ATA gates at MDW.
