EasyJet In Talks With Pula Airport (Croatia).

Thu Nov 11, 2004 5:26 am

easyJet is in talks with Pula Airport on the Istrian Peninsular in Croatia and seems keen to establish flights from it's UK and German bases.

This sounds quite an interesting destination and different to easyJet's other Eastern/Central European destinations. I would have thought Zagreb the capital of Croatia would have been considered first as like other destinations to this area of Europe they usually fly to the countries main city.

Pula is a very small city, but Croatia's largest tourist centre and attracts many German and English package holidays. Before the Yugoslavian war in the 1990's this was one Europes largest tourist destinations after Spain.

"easyJet in talks with Croatian airport, plans flights to UK and Germany

ZAGREB (AFX) - Budget airline easyJet PLC is in talks with Pula airport in
the north-west of Croatia to set up daily flights from Croatia to Germany and
the UK, airport director Bruno Rogovic said.

Rogovic said the agreement could be signed by the end of the week and would
introduce daily flights to the UK and Germany from Pula.

Pula airport last year held similar talks with Ryanair Holdings PLC, which
were abandoned.

This is good news for the Istrian Riviera, this proves that the link must be needed to this area of Europe. I hope this gets the go-ahead.

This is good news if the Cro authorities lets this happen as it as it will take money away from the monopoly that is Croatia Airlines who charge ridiculous amounts due to lack of competition. BA has SPU and DBV sewn up so the coastline of this beautiful country only now needs a link to Zadar.

Working for easyJet myself I have been led to believe that route development was within the 10 new EU countries... Croatia is not one of these countries
The customer is always right.....unless he is a passenger!

I will be very satisfied when low cost carriers, such as EasyJet, start engulfing the Balkan market. Slovenia is the first Balkan nation where EasyJet began flying, and indeed the flights between London and Ljubljana has taken a fair chunk from the flights that are operated between London and Zagreb. Croatia Airlines estimated that since EasyJet commenced flights to Ljubljana, they registered about 20 passengers less per flight between ZAG and LHR.

Without a doubt, if EasyJet were to begin service to Pula, this will be another good alternative for the inhabitants of Rijeka, Karlovac and Zagreb. The only issue is how protective will the Croatian government be towards Croatia Airlines. Surely the government will not support policies that will seriously hamper the national airline, especially since last year was the first time the airline posted a profit... not to mention that it is government owned and operated.

It would be hard to see the Cro governmant wanting to weaken there own airline, but in order to bring in the tourists they need to attract as many airlines as possible. Germanwings already offers lo-cost from Germany.

The Croatian government has recently shown interest in signing an agreement to join the EU open skies.

Do the government has an agreement with Germany that allows the likes of Germanwings to fly there? and not one with the rest of the EU so Easy can fly there cheaply?

Polce Airport is not an airport that a Jet plane could use. There are no facilities for an airline so this is never going to happen. I hope that this hppens but I'll believe it when I see it. I really don;t think we'll see Easyjet or Rynair in Croatia until Croatia jons the EU. When that happens we'll see services to all Croatia's coastal airports:
Pula, Rijeka (krk),Zadar, Split and Durbovnik. I would like to see an easyjet service to Zagreb too.

After that, what about Belgrade/Sarajevo or Romania??

I was talking to someone at work and he said the deal for Croatia is almost done, it will be announced and in operation hopefully sometime in December just after the Bratislava route opens!
