RE: DuPage Co. Angry Over O'Hare Expansion Plans

I usually don't support the NIMBY positions, but in this case, they do have a point - has the homework been done? Where are the proposals? What will the final plan be?

I myself wouldn't support any plan that didn't have all the details worked out before starting construction - public view, environmental impact reports, costs ($$$$$$) are all important. If all of that HAS been worked out, then it might just be grumbling NIMBY's...but if it hasn't, let's see the details of ORD's expansion!!

Construction hasn't begun, because the environmental study and the FAA decision are not yet on record.

The costs are irrelevant, since zero state or local taxpayer dollars are going to fund it.

All details, of course, are fully available.

JUST BUILD A THIRD AIRPORT---Gary is in a dump (i drove by that airport not too long ago and i would not trust my car sitting there). If they can have 3 major airports in the DC region then they can have another airport for the chicago area.
The next generation of aircraft is just around the corner!

This project has been subject to several in-depth studies and the details are well known. The FAA is currently reviewing the proposals...I read a newspaper article last week that the FAA could approve them sometime towards the end of next summer (September they were thinking).

They didn't succeed in stopping the new runways, so now they're going after the western access, eh?

If there's any component of the ORD expansion that makes sense, it's this one. Currently the folks from DuPage have to drive essentially all the way around O'Hare and into the "funnel" entrance on I-190. If these whiners want to continue driving an extra 30 minutes to catch their flights, I guess it doesn't really bother me.

I will admit, though, that I'm not sure exactly what "western access" entails. All the proposals I've seen show the Elgin-O'Hare Expressway coming to a dead stop at Route 83 on the west side of the airport - clear across the airfield from the terminals or anything of note. If they're going to provide western access that's worth the time and money, they need to get a road all the way into the central terminal area... ideally through a tunnel under the airfield.

I don't want to think of what that will cost, and I doubt the folks running the expansion will either. Most likely we'll see a half-assed Elgin-O'Hare extension that comes to a dead stop at Route 83, and is thus utterly useless.
