Delta's L1011 Routes

Fri Nov 12, 2004 12:39 am

Just curious if any DL gurus know which routes were common L1011 routes back in its prime.

The only one I really remember for sure is:

--ATL-LAX

And I'm willing to bet these were L1011 routes as well:

--ATL-SFO
--ATL-SEA
--LAX-HNL
--LAX-LGA?

What about overseas routes?

--JFK-CDG??
--JFK-LGW/LHR??

I think you hit the nail on the head on every one of those....I think thats just the tip of the iceberg too. I know back then (long before I was here) they used to have them ATL-MEM and ATL-MCI in the heyday.....

RE: Delta's L1011 Routes

Delta have never served London from New York, and have never flown under their own certificate to Heathrow.

However, a great deal of European ops in the 1980s and early 1990s were performed primarily by the L-1011s. Gradually, as the 767-300ERs came online, they supplemented L-1011-250s and -500s on international routes, but the L-1011 was still the backbone until the early mid '90s. Once they had enough MD-11s and they started dropping some Pacific ops, such as Hong Kong and Seoul, etc., the MD-11 then appeared on the Transatlantic routes, eventually relegating the L-1011s to domestic-only operations.

Transatlantic L-1011 routes included routes such as Detroit-London Gatwick, Orlando-Miami-London and Atlanta-London-Copenhagen/Frankfurt, and most Atlanta / JFK transatlantic service.

L-1011s flew all Pacific services until MD-11s came online in late '91/'92. They flew, for example, from LAX to Hong Kong via Anchorage.

L-1011s also a predominant number of routes both transcontinental and North-South in the US, including the majority of services to major Florida cities such as Ft. Lauderdale, Miami, Orlando and Tampa. The last commercial L-1011 service was from Orlando to Atlanta, on July 31, 2001.

Hope this helps.

You're just skimming the surface. I won't get very detailed with my bit of info:

DEN-ATL
DEN-SLC

Don't forget about all the other L1011 flights in/out of DFW and SLC.

Do a photo search on DL L1011. More than 500 hits there. Should cover most locations I'd have thought.

Yea, I actually wanted to avoid that. Not only looking for specific route info, but any other supplemental info people can provide.

LGA-MCO

JFK-ATL
JFK-FLL

DFW-HNL

LAX-HNL

ATL-HNL
ATL-LAX

ATL-DFW
DFW-LAX
ATL-LGA
ATL-BOS
ATL-SLC
ATL-SFO
ATL-MCO
ATL-SAN
LAX-SAN
LAX-HNL
LAX-SFO
at some point they flew ATL-IAH in the late 70s early 80s with the Tristar. These are the routes I can remember off the top of my head. The L1011 was my favorite aircraft and the only reason why I became a Delta Skymiles member--now I have the last 10,000 miles that I will probably donate to charity.

They even had the L10s going from ATL-DTW and ORD-ATL. I got to go on 63 L-1011s since 1998-2001. I use to buy a ticket just to fly on the L-1011s. I flew a few times from San-Atl and back same day to go on a L-1011. I don't do that any more because all the planes suck except for the 747.

In the early 80s, probably until 1985 approx.

BOS-YUL
YUL-MIA-FLL (I flew this one myself)
FLL-MIA-YUL (I flew this one myself on my way back)
YUL-BOS

I remember in 1984 seeing a DL L10 landing on runway 28 at YUL, only 7000 ft long! Of course, it was quite windy that day.

We had lots of Tri-Stars down here, especially during season.

Only widebodies we get now are 763 and 762, haven't seen a 764 in here yet! ( Unless it was a last minute equipment change)

I flew IAH-ATL back in 1980's. L1011 also flew ATL-CAE, ATL-PIT, CVG-DAY, CVG-LAX, and ATL-PHL. It's rare scheduled in short time occasionally DFW-SAT using L1011-500. That's all I can remember now.

CVG-LGW. I took this flight in March 91.
MCO-ATL
TPA-ATL
TPA-FLL (continuing flight from LAX-MSY-TPA)
ATL-SEA

I miss flying that old bird. Loved to hear that thing creak and groan when taking off. Dad was a DL employee so I flew frequently and loved to see an L-10 sitting at the gate. May just be me, but loved the dual collision lights top and bottom. Set it apart from other a/c.
I miss those DL L-1011's

Hi there,

Delta did operate L-1011 service out of Frankfurt, Germany:

New York(JFK) up to double daily!!!
Los Angeles daily NONSTOP (DL057/58)!!!
Miami
Orlando
Washington (Dulles)
Cincinnati
Atlanta
San Francisco
Dallas/Ft. Worth
Boston
and Detroit via London/Gatwick (briefly!!!)

They took all these fine Pan Am routes incl. several intra-european flights (mostly with A-310 and 727)
MIA, BOS, SFO was disc. quite soon while the other flights last quite a while will 1996!
They started A-310 service and B-767 service to replace the three holers!
Finally only MD-11 and B-767-300 flew to Frankfurt from Atlanta, Cincinnati and New York/JFK. Now the MD-11 has been replaced by B-777 !! ! ! ! !

I think DL flew the L-1011s on ORD-ATL pretty much the entire time the TriStar was in the fleet. My father flew them throughout the 70s and 80s. I flew on an L-1011-500 from ATL to ORD in November, 1999.

The MCO-FRA route was started in 1988 long before Delta acquired Pan Am's atlantic routes and Frankfurt hub. It's amazing how many different concepts Delta has had with their operation at Orlando, ranging from Int'l flights, to a reliever hub for ATL, to a low cost hub, etc, etc. In fact, IIRC Delta's intial filings for flights to Central America were from Orlando NOT Atlanta. They however, never flew the routes from Orlando.

Only widebodies we get at PBI now are 763 and 762, haven't seen a 764 in here yet! ( Unless it was a last minute equipment change)

the L1011 is my favorite plane, and i always scheduled myself on the L10 flights out of PBI. there were generally four L10 flights to atlanta.

when delta first unrolled the 764 service, there were 2 per day mixed into the atlanta schedule. after season ended that year, we didn't see them again.

continental sent a 764 here a few times as equipment replacements.

I've only flown a limited number of routes on the L10...but many times on the palne

my dad flew for 2 months straight FLL-ATL-FLL on weekends...usually on the L1011, so I saw the plane weekly!

Also, I flew FLL-ATL-FLL...my favorite being flight 454/230!
I also flew LGA-ATL on the L1011...do not remember if I flew ATL-LGA on it though

Finally, I flew ATL-SJU in Summer 2000...the flight went HNL-LAX-ATL-SJU...flight 188. I was supposed to take it on 189 SJU-ATL, but they had a last minute equipment change to a 763.

ON FLL-ATL-FLL, I flew on all 3 types of the L1011...I believe I only had 1 with 3 class seating.
NEXT FLIGHT: FLL-ATL-HPN on FL

I flew CVG-ZRH-CVG in July 95 . That was my first International/movie/widebody flight. The movie was 'Outbreak'. I wish I wrote down the reg #s. I remember being bummed that we weren't on a MD-11.

In the early 90s, DL flew out of BOS on L10s:

ATL
BDA
BDL
FLL (3x a day with L10)
MCO (3x a day with L10 supplemented with 757s, 762/763s and M88s)
PBI (3x a day with L10)
YUL
perhaps more

I always wondered how they could support 3 L10s to FLL/PBI and then switched to DL Express 732s 3-4x a day. Possibly because the L10s became maintenance hogs and were expensive to operate (not that the 732s were much better!)

What a great aircraft in its day. They sure are missed.
