What Airline Needs A New Paint Scheme The Most?

Sat Mar 11, 2000 4:36 pm

Just as the post says. What airline do you think most desperately needs a new paint scheme? Please do not reply British Airways, because I believe the World Images will be gone within the next 5 years and I have read many posts regarding a dislike for this scheme. That said, I think the corporate logo and paint schemes most in need of an update are:

Iberia---Very 70's looking
Cathay Pacific----It's fairly new, but I think it looks terrible
Aerolineas Argentinas----They went back to their 70's scheme, and it definitely WAS a step backwards (although the other scheme was not too good either)
KLM-----Come on, baby blue. What's up with that?

Only my opinions, I'd like to hear yours!

I think KLMs livery is one of the best around - I love flying in those blues. Its interesting to find Northwest altering their colours to look more like KLM when they starting working together. I think MAS definately needs an update - and as I have posted before - watch that space as MAS is rumoured to be revealing a new corporate identity - presumably when they take delivery of their new fleets (of A32X and B77X)

Well, it just proves "eye of the beholder" as I think both CO and US liveries are terrific! Agree that KLM and Iberia are tired.

AA - the worst
OS - also very ugly
CO is quite good with the golden globe
MH fine but can be more imaginative
KA - very weird dragon!!
NH - hate those words on the tail
FE (Far Eastern Air Transport) - they even have FAT written on their tails!!! (www.fat.com.tw)
B7 (UNI Air) - extremely boring
BA new colour - I still think the chelsea rose is the best
BM - as I said, I don't like words on tails
TWA - the globe is cool, but again, hate the TWA on the tail
JL - what's that on the tail?
DL - bad
Southwest - very old fashioned, hard to believe they didn't introduce a new scheme when the 737-700s arrived!
Air India - very old fashioned
NZ- please bold the title, they are too thin, hardly visible on large aircrafts.
ALL mainland chinese airlines except "china yunnan" -- please be aware that this is 2000, not 1900!!!! Just look at what they draw on "China general aviation"!! GEES!

Southwest and is gawdy, but its one of the few airlines that offer easy recognition when viewing in the air from the ground. Brand recognition is a good thing.

As far as cargo, Kitty Hawk and Kitty Hawy Intl has to be the worst. Extremely generic.

I'm partial to blue and gray so I like UA and USA. the paint looks good on the RJs too.

IMO,Delta. I thought their old livery needed updating as it had a decidedly 50's look to my eyes, but now that I see their "new" paint scheme...the older one never looked so good till now. No offense to any Deltoids--it's a fine carrier but I just think the paint jobs are a touch staid.

CO is good
US is just fair. I don't like the flag.
DL not so good, it's not as classy looking as the carriers listed below.
AA, LH and KLM all have regal, stately liveries that I really like.
I agree with the queen. BA's designs are a little overboard. Long live the union jack design!
TW has probably the best I think, the globe is meaningless for TW though, because they go so few places. Ever think of that?
I also like ATA's.
The old CO had neat livery even though some have called it a "meatball." I still kind of think of them as that airline flying off into the golden, tropical sunset. I mean they still fly to all the sun destinations in Mexico, Central and South America, and off course all those islands in the South Pacific like New Caledonia, Guam, and Bali. But of course the new livery is more contemporary.

IB's is also outdated as others have mentioned.

I also think that SAA's livery is interesting and distinctive, along with Iran Air's. Yes I am serious. Tell me what you think.

Here are some airlines that could use a new paint job: Alitalia, American (bring back the bolt), Southwest (could use a livery that reflects more of the United States than the current scheme.), Air JMC(barf!), Japan Airlines (looks like a cigarette!), and Iberia. What do you think? : )

Lufthansa's logo is great, but the all-white planes look very generic
SOUTHWEST- Reminds me of a '70s living room
AIRTRAN- What could be more dynamic than a big lower-case "a?"
NORTHWEST- The red/grey thing, although unique, sucks.
AEROFLOT- The new one, with the '80s teeny-bopper nacelles.
AMERICAN EAGLE- Yeech!
PIA- Just too dated & unimaginative
KUWAIT AIRWAYS- Ditto
PAN AM- For being a sheep in wolf's clothing
EASTWIND (If they're still around) I hate that damn bee! I hate that airline!

Bring back the cheatline!

- Yes, Aeroflot is really horrible. Both old and new paint schemes.

- Yes, all Chinese carriers except Cathay Pacific have tasteless and outdated liveries. They all look like remains from the 50s.

- From the big airlines I think the next candidates for repainting beside the already mentioned Eastern uglies should be All Nippon (looks a bit cheap, I think JAL looks better), Alitalia (used to be nice - in the Seventies!), KLM (basically nice, but needs some refreshing, especially the boring tail), Continental (why did they change from read to blue? Only the tail looks nice) and Malaysia (Horrible grey underside)

- Coming from Germany I beg all airlines over here except LH (should start thinking though), Condor (thank God they abolished grey) and LTU to repaint their fleets:
Hapag-Lloyd: orange and blue - what a colour combination, right for a cheap gas station!
Aero Lloyd: plain boring
Eurowings: even more so
Hamburg International: cheaplooking Lufthansa copy
Air Berlin: Dark red, white, grey. Whoow, Grandpa!
and so on...

I think the Canada 3000 airlines and Royal airlines need a change in their
colour scheme. Canada 3000 had those same colours for 10 years!! Befor that
air 2000 had those colours!!! Royal's colours are ugly too!!!

Here's a few airlines I think need a new c/s:

Aerolineas Argentinas - Worst livery change I've ever seen in my life!! From a totally unique one to something that looks like it's copied from Iberia! The tail? Don't ask.

Monarch - Ugliest livery of ANY airline I've ever seen! The gold and black has got to go! So does the logo on the tail!

Air JMC - Would've been a neat c/s if it weren't for the barfesque green! Just looking at it makes me want to find a barf bag - fast!!

Canada 3000 - This airline could use a new and refreshing c/s!

Southwest - Looks like its management is stuck in a '70s time warp - like the Brady Bunch!

Also, all mainland Chinese and Taiwanese carriers except for China Airlines, Cathay Pacific, Dragonair and Eva Air need to really update their liveries, especially with the economic success these guys have had(apart from the crisis, I mean)!

I love Delta, but I would have to vote to replace their new boring livery ---- not really any better than the old one & the "Delta" on the tail lacks class.

I also believe Eva Air needs an update & I completely agree on KLM ---- one of the worst & dated livery around!

American also needs to get with the times....

I wanna start by asking you a question, what's wrong with the paint scheme for BA?!!!!!!
Some surgestions for needed hair doos:
Lufthansa:damn it does not even kick dust.
Alitalia
AOM
Air france
JAL
ANA
Delta
Northwest
Air Lingus
Finnair
I can't think of any more but now I will eventually.
Most of all I not too happy about "most-white-type-of paint-schemes".
Although I love SAS's new look, beatifully designed!!!

I like British. I never know what I'll see next. I really like the Danmark tail with the yellow, blue and red. I also like Aeroflot newer tail. I've only seen the blue, fuscha, and white one. I think Lufthansa, American, America West and Horizon all need new schemes.

I dont think Americans is too bad, however it could be better. BUT...the AA's recently aquired MD-80's from Reno Air are the ugliest thing ever. They just painted the stripes right over the old white paint of Reno Air.

The Best scheme has got to be Continental Airlines!!!

My Opinions are about the color schemes for all major airlines around the globes ... now If I have to tell you what airlines needs new color, and what are my favorites schemes here ...

Very Best Color Schemes:

1. Delta
2. British Airways
3. JAL
4. El Al Israel
5. Hawaiian
6. Lufthansa
7. US Airways

Needs new colors/make-over :

1. American
2. United
3. Northwest
4. KLM
5. Air France
6. Iberia
7. Royal Jordanian

I would thinks that Iberia is almost a same look as Sun Country, so bad I thinks it likes same color schemes, different designs !!

Lets me hear your opinions here !

SAS The old was bad, the new is horrific! Looks like a kindergarden let loose with crayons!

LH boring as f***

Good ones:
BA - ethnic tails are terrific - finally an airline with guts!
Sterling European - nice and daring
Air New Zealand: A prime example of how to develop an old logo (Tail) into something strikingly beautifull

I think RYANAIR has a very good idea in painting some commercials on their planes!
In this way we could find some cool and funny color scheme! and all their a/c will have diferents color! :-)

My opinion goes for these airlines :

EVA Airways - The livery looks crapy and cheap.
Malaysia Ailrines - It needs to change its rather old c/s.
Aerolineas Argentinas - that 70's look!
Iberia - the same goes for this
British Airways - should revert back to the old c/s that
is more stately and majestic.
Sabena - somehow the old c/s looks smarter than the
current one. The new ones cheapens the looks.

I think one of the WORST in the air is USAirways, It is very dark and gloomy. I liked their old silver Usair livery better. And I heard that they spend and average of $300,000 a year on paint and extra fuel in their 737s be couse of the new DARK paint livery.

Southwest without a doubt. I've heard some pilots refer to them as "Herb turds"

JetBlue isn't all that great. Why don't they just settle on one?

USAir is very dull. I've never liked gray on an aircraft.

I think the JMC color scheme is sloppy. It needs work. Also, I think the American Airlines scheme makes their planes look old and rusty. I think it is okay when they paint the plane white instead of silver. It would be a great scheme if they kept the plane a lot more glossy, but that would probably be very expensive.

Airlines adopt schemes for brand recognition.

In my book, some fine examples of this are:

Finnair, Swissair, South African Airways (all are the flags of their respective countries.

Olympic Airways (new modified scheme looks cool)...now who doesn't associate the Olympics with Greece.

QANTAS...the Flying Kangaroo has been part of the company's history since day dot and don't see them changing it any time in the near future.

Aer Lingus...Shamrock will always remind one of Ireland.

Where it starts to go astray is when you have a country with multiple airlines who have to find themselves an identity which people will associate with the company. The ones that I think have been covered pretty well in previous postings.

Let's go with the horrible ones first:
AMERICAN: It's time to change their colors....time to spend some money.
ALITALIA: Boaring
DELTA AIRLINES (3rd): it's not bad but need the cheat line.
BWIA(new): Didn't fill my expectations.
IBERIA and AEROLINEAS ARGENTINAS: They both need new designed....IB also killed VIASA's colors.
AIR INDIA:Would never fly a horrible plane, like those.
TOWER AIR: Really Bad.
OLYMPIC: Old fashioned.
LTU: Please change.
LUFTHANSA: Boaring.
SOUTHWEST: It's time to change.
NORTHWEST: No class
AEROMEXICO: Too dark.

These are OK:
UNITED: So, so.
USAIRWAYS: Bowling shoes.
AVIANCA: either hot or cold.
TWA: better than the old one, but not great
SWISSAIR: OK
JAL: Better than the old one.
AEROFLOT: same as above.

GOOD ONES:
LANCHILE
KLM
BRITISH AIRWAYS: Love all their tails
CONTINENTAL
QANTAS
EL AL
CANADIAN: with the swan on the tail.
JET BLUE

THE BEST ONES ARE:
3rd place AIR CANADA: Lovely tail.
2nd place: AIR TAHITI NUI: Nice Blue.

.....and the best of the BEST

1st PLACE for AIR JAMAICA: Best colors, best tail with the LOVE BIRD. Can't miss it on the air or ground....

Please let me know your opinion.

I personally think that all the airlines are fine as they are. My favorites are continental, United, Air Canada, British Airways, Cathay Pacific, Quantas, American Airlines (even though itS old) Delta's old one was better
Lufthansa is good along with Air France, US airways KLM,Singapore Airlines and Korean Air
Oh just i think that UPS could use a change as well and Evergreen International well I guess I pretty much got all the major airlines.

Tom's top 10 airlines that need new paint jobs:

1) Delta-yes, I've seen the new one, and I'm not being sarcastic
2) USAirways-black/very dark blue doesn't look good on an airplane, see also...
3) United-see USAirways
4) Air France/Lufthansa...tied because they're so similar
6) UPS-all that's missing is the address label
7) Japan Air Lines-looks like a lit cigarette
8) Air Canada-brighten up the tail a little (same design)
9) SAS-not very imaginative
10) any cargo hauler other than FedEx

Advice for American and Southwest: don't mess with a good thing. There's a lot to be said for tradition and brand recognition.

Southwest has and always will have the worst paint job because the airline is too cheap to spend more money on repainting their fleet. Barf brown is not meant for aircraft. LH also has a very dull c/s... I hate all white aircraft (Hear that Delta???) Also needing a new c/s are:
Air Afrique
Air Belgium
Air Canada
Air Holland
Air Jamaica
Air Pacific (the new one stinks)
Air Zimbabwe
ALM
BWIA (the old was better than the new)
Cyprus Airways
Edelweiss Air
Ethiopian Airlines
Korean Air (too similar to KLM)
Olympic
Uzbekistan Airways (are they painted that way to remind the pilots which way goes up??)
Virgin Express

In all of the posts to the original question, I have seen a huge list of airlines listed as requiring new liveries, but not one person has offered a suggestion as to what to change it to.

For example, Olympic Airways. The Olympic rings remind me of the Olympic Games which in turns reminds me of Greece.

Japan Airlines...The crane is an elegant and important bird in Japanese culture. What would one suggest?

If you are gonna bag a livery, try and come up with an alternative.
