Runway Thick With Smoking Rubber!
The rubber on this BEY runway looks really thick, at least a few millimeters. I thought there was only ever skid marks. Could this really be or is it an illusion?

Eventually the rubber does build up, degrading the traction of the pavement, it is usually removed once it builds up enough.

And also I'd think in a place as warm as BEY or LAS where the sun really heats up the pavement that there would be more of a build up since rubber tends to stick more to hot surfaces.

The operator of the airport, Middle East Airport Services (MEAS), one of MEA's three subsidaries de-rubberizes the runways.

Another type of periodic cleaning is the Periodic Derubberizing of Runways, especially on the Aviation Marking Lines with Sweeper Derruberizer.

At SFO, a rubber removal company comes out about 4 times a year to remove the buildup. The majority of time they work on the touchdown areas of 28L and 28R. The same company rotates around the different airports up and down the west coast.

What kind of buildup thickness are we talking about here, 1cm? What is the world's widest improved surface runway? The runway @ X68 is 300ft. across...any larger than that?
