Delta Widebodies In Boston?

Sat Nov 13, 2004 3:23 pm

I noticed a few Delta widebodies in Boston recently. Does anyone have any information on them?

Model? Destinations served? I didn't think they have a hub there and was a little confused by all of the hustle and bustle.

Thanks

What about the proposed FCO service. Is that happening?

Gigneil: The proposed FCO flight never got off the ground. Alitalia has since come in and filled the void offering 5x weekly flights to FCO in addition to their daily MXP flights, both on 767s. Wonder if the FCO flight will be back next Summer. As far as I know it did well in terms of passenger loads, but it was a scheduling nightmare. It always came in late, but was only slotted 1hr45 for the turnaround and would always leave late. I think AZ finally started to cross flights. The 767 from FCO would arrive at 1600 and depart at 1835 as the MXP flight. The 767 from MXP would arrive at around 1245 and depart at 1745 as the FCO flight. Therefore even if the FCO flight arrived a bit late, with the longer turnaround time it improved their overall ontime record. I also don't think AZ were too happy that they were the proverbial straw that broke the camel's back. The camel being the IAB, Terminal E, at Logan. The straw being the fact that gate control has always been able to squeak by not making any carriers have to use a hardstand boarding. Even if some airlines had to tow off the gate and come back later or wait for their gate on the apron after landing every departure from Terminal E was done off a gate (save for when Air Canada's YOW, YHZ, and YUL flights when they were there. AC moved to Terminal C in 2003). However, most days either the FCO or MXP flight would have to have their passengers bused over to the plane that would be parked on a remote stand to board.

Either way, I'd like to see the FCO flight return, whether it be with DL or AZ metal.

In the early 90s DL also had L10 service to BDL and back! I believe the routing was BDL-BOS-BDA roundtrip. Crazy!

How recently....?? The Red Sox just finished up their World Series run and the Patriots are now playing...?? That, along with any number of colleges in the Boston area.

As someone said, Delta runs 763's from ATL. I'm booked on one for 12/17. From what I can tell, they're all using gate C28

I'm booked on one next Tuesday, DL350 ATL-BOS (the 0813 flight)...as of right now, the flight is oversold and DL is not selling any Y seats (there are plenty of F seats open, but you can't book a Y seat, even the blocked out seats reserved for elites are full, and I can view those).

You can add LAX and LGW to the list of DL widebody destinations...back in the day, DL 60/61 flew LAX-BOS-LGW-BOS-LAX, and there was another 767-300 that just did LAX-BOS-LAX (I was going to do this one to go to LAS BOS-LAX-LAS, but I ended up not having to book that trip).

N. E. Patriots often use a DL 767-300 via Providence as well.

DL never had service to LGW from BOS that was NW that had the route.

Actually, Delta did serve LGW from BOS back in 2001 if memory serves. It didn't last very long, but I remember seeing it leave from Terminal C once when I was waiting for a Delta Express flight down to FLL or PBI.

DL did, in fact, serve LGW from BOS.

DL did have BOS-LGW using the 763ER in Summer 01 through 02. However, due to them serving LGW with no onward feed out of LGW, the flight failed. Also at the time there was overcapacity in the BOS-LON market, and pax prefer LHR. I think you will see more widebodies and some new international routes when DL moves to the new Terminal A in the spring.

To my knowledge, DL, AA, VS, and NW have all served BOS-LGW. NW had it first, and then in the 1990s, AA served the route with a 767 (forget if it was a 200 or 300). When AA bailed, DL came a while later and picked it up. The service was cancelled after 9/11. VS had been operating BOS-LGW since it landed at BOS, it switched to LHR in 2002 or 2003 though. I think VS was going to run a 4x weekly 747 service to LGW last summer, but it never came to fruition. Currently, all BOS-LON service is to LHR (BA has 2x 777 and a 744, VS has a 744, AA has 2x 777); at the time DL was on BOS-LGW, BA had 3 daily 747-200/777s to LHR, AA had 2 daily 767-300s to LHR, UA had a daily 767-300 to LHR (I miss seeing UA widebodies at BOS, it was always nice seeing those UA 767s going to LHR or LAX/SFO), and VS had a daily 747-200 to LGW.
